While it's a bit tricky on a laptop computer, you can always disconnect
the speaker(s). Does anybody really need Windows sounds? I always have
them turned off, and back before Windows, I used to mount a toggle
switch on the case so I could turn the speaker off unless I really
wanted it on.
If you're using your computer for some sort of professional recording,
you aren't going to need the speakers anyway so a "permanent
modification" isn't really that much of a hardship. If you want to do
some editing on the road, you'll probalby be doing that on headphones
anyway.
But, bottom line, if you select a sound setup with all sounds off, all
sounds should be off. Period. And you can tell Steve Ball that I said
so.
