Any opionions on the Mackie 400F unit? I'm not too worried about the
lack of ADAT support.
Thanks

Lots. Go to the Mackie forum where everyone goes to bitch about it and
others come to praise it. Take your pick. There are more complainers
than supporters, but then what else would you expect on a
manufacturer's forum?

They must be down, I can't get in.

Did you really need to write that? Maybe you're too impatient to have a
400F. Get yourself a good cassette deck and go record your music. <g>

Cassette deck? I haven't heard that term in nearly two decades :)
I can get by with my Mackie 1402 VLZ Pro and my Behringer FCA202 for
now.

That should hold you until the Mackie forum gets back up. They often do
maintenance on Friday afternoons. I think there's a principle of tech
support about doing things on Friday afternoon, so that if it breaks,
they'll get overtime to come in and fix it over the weekend.

I have no issues with the mixer, but the FCA202 leaves something to be
desired. It works fine, as long as you only want to record one stereo
track at a time.

Well, I suppose that could be explained by the fact that this is a
2-input device. Have you given any thought to upgrading your mixer to
an Onyx and getting the Firewire option card for it? That will give you
as many inputs as the size of the mixer you buy, and you'll have a
better mixer for when you need a mixer.
It seems that there are a lot of 400Fs still on the shelves that have a
problem (I suspect it's with internal grounding) that causes an audible
whine in the monitor outputs. Mackie says they have a fix for this, but
from the reports on the forum, not everyone who has returned one for
repair has been satisfied with what they got back. It could be a system
problem (susceptable to noise that doesn't originate in the 400F) - I
don't know, I don't have one so I haven't experienced it myself. But I
do have an Onyx mixer equippped with the Firewire card and it seems to
be working fine.

Yes, but its cost prohibative at the moment. I am also considering on
of the MOTU units, maybe the 828mkii or the UlrtaLite.

Check out the RME Fireface 400 - this unit gets rave reviews on the
net. I use a RME ADI8 DS with a Hammerfall card and this combo is rock
solid and sounds great.

Way to expensive for me.
