View Full Version : Mic stand threading - two types or three???

I'm having a problem connecting mic stand parts, and it has me puzzled.
I was under the impression that there were two types of mic stand
threads - 5/8" 27 pitch US, and 3/8" European. But I'm running into
some parts that appear to be 5/8" male that will not attach to various
5/8" female connections, such as mic clips or a Shure A27M stereo bar.
The problem parts are various 3/8 female to 5/8 male adapters.
OK, so I got some junky parts. Except for two things: I also have a
couple of jam nuts that fit the problem 5/8 parts perfectly, and the
kicker - I have one adapter that's 5/8 female to 5/8 male. The female
side mates perfectly with the problem adapters, and the male side fits
perfectly into the A27M. And (woe is me) I don't know where I got this
magical part.
So, can you point me to a source for 3/8 female -> 5/8 male adapters
that implement the 5/8 27 thread or a source for these magical 5/8
female -> 5/8 male adapters that fix the problem thread?
Thanks very much,
Fran

Sounds like tolerances are working against you. Most mic stand tubes
have rolled threads which tend to be a little oversized. You can try
another adapter and maybe it'll fit better, have a machinst custom make
one for you (he'll need the parts you're trying to fit it to), or get
out the ol' jar of Vaseline. <g>

It sounds like you have some poorly cut male threads. You could use a
5/8"-27 die and die chuck to clean them up and make them fit. The jam nuts
likely are over tapped and a bit loose on a good 5/8"-27 stud.
BTW ~ There actually is a third (albeit obsolete) standard: 1/2" NPT
(pipe)!

I believe that Atlas Sound will sell you some of them.
You can also buy some 5/8-27 dies from MSC and chase the bad threads.
What you are encountering is sadly typical of the cheap mike stands
with rolled threads.

Or get a 5/8" 27 pitch US 'die' to correct the lax thread.

Another aspect is that the metal is probably pretty crappy too, and in a
short time you'll have very little thread at all. Don't put an expensive
mic on it at that point, and buy another brand next time !

The solution may well be to get one of the Atlas extender gadgets, and to
epoxy it in place over the damaged rolled threads.

Please, somebody, tell Sony that it's obsolete....
The fancy mic clip/adapter thingie that comes with their wee M-S stereo
microphone is threaded 1/2" NPT. And no, they don't sell adapters (I had a
fried (Thanks Jaan!) make me one, but I hate to impose).

Dunno about Altas, but I once poxied a 3/8 adaptor onto a 5/8" 0 tpi boom
end ! Still there many years later, I believe.
