Greetings,

A friend sent me song files recorded in Pro Tools. The extension on the
PT file is .ptf

A larger studio in town here with a full blown PT system said this is
not a usual extension and he could not open them. Has anyone seen this
extension and know what it denotes? What is the usual PT file extension?

This is the situation. I work on MOTU-DP 4.6. I wanted the get the
files saved in AAF format so I could open them and work on them in DP.
Seems like it should be possible. Seems like I should be able to load
these up in PT and save them off as AAF dong a simple 'save as...'

Send it back isn't an option at the moment as she (lives in LA) is out
of town.

Does anyone know about saving as AAF files? I asked this question
earlier but didn't get any responses.

Up until now I think Digi Translator has been the ticket for file
sharing. AAF is supposed to make files closer to universal for cross
platform sharing. Is anyone doing this yet?

My system...DP 4.6 (also, Soundtrack pro, Mackie Tracktion, Cubase, Bias
Peak, Abelton Live)

G5 2gh dual. 1.5 gig ram, DM24, etc....

Yes,
..ptf files are from protools 7 or higher....
still compatible with other protools versions.

I have a related question:
I use protools TDM 5.3 running under OS9.2 and that is good for what I do.
I am a little afraid of not being compatible with other protools (7 and 8)
in the future.
Shall I think of upgrading my system to HD?

That studio is keeping track of current tech. .ptf means a PT7 session.
A PT6.x session would use a .pts suffix.

They either need to upgrade their software (which is cheap, under $200
for HD, only $75 for LE) or you'll have to find someone who has PT7 who
can do a "Save Session Copy As..." Choose an earlier version (as far
backwards as you need to go to make it compatible) and click save. Some
file names will be shortened and PT7-native plug-ins will be greyed out,
but then the "larger studio" will be able to open the session. Then
again, if all you want is an AAF, maybe you will no longer have any
reason to deal with the "larger studio" at all if you go to someone else
with PT7...

You need DigiTranslator 2 to create AAF files. Absent that, it won't be
possible.

I'm still waiting for the need to arise. I often get OMF files from
picture editors, but what I send back is fully mixed stereo files
referenced to 1:00:00:00. No one ever wants to bother trying to import
a mix "session" back into their timeline. As a result, I've never even
used it.

Bah! That should have been "...ISN'T keeping track of current tech."

I blame the beer...
