Standard Ipod earbuds with hearing protection overtop. Highly Fashionable.

I guess Kevin asked only for efficiency and "closed".
OTOH, if he had asked for something that sounded good....

Are you suggesting there's an assumption I should have made? ;)

I hear Grado SR 60's were good

They are excellent headphones, BUT they don't block out external sounds
very well, and they are low-Z loads that are difficult for cheap headphone
drive stages to handle. The Ipod is probably going to be a lot happier
with a higher impedance headphone.

I got my set of ATH-AD700's and found out the pads do not touch the ears.
The pads fit around the ears. Comparing the Grado's with the Audio Technica's,
well, you can't. The head vice gets in the way of listening.
Its the ATH-A700 with the closed backs.

Not really, since headphones are really such a personal thing. Lots of
folks like the Sony MDR-V6, which is easy to drive but very pitched up
on top. I find them intolerable for casual listening but they are great
for trying to hear tape edits. Lots of folks like the Beyer DT-100 series
phones, which do a good job of blocking out outside sound but seem a little
gritty on top to me.
The Etymotics are hard to beat for sound quality and isolation, but they
leave my ears sore if I wear them for long periods of time. And they are
expensive.
Sennheiser made a whole line of decent-sounding headphones with good
padding and isolation and fairly high input Z, although the ones I have
tried have all been discontinued. I think it would definitely be worth
giving an audition to their latest line, though.
I really wish manufacturers would spend a little more effort and money into
decent headphone amp stages. Yeah, I know that means a larger battery and
a heavier box, but it really makes a difference.

There are a lot of people who really don't like the way Etys sound, myself
included. I'd take a pair of Shure E3s any day. I own both them and a pair
of Etys. However, for the money its hard to beat the Futuresonics earphones.
Comfort versus bass response with IEM's is usually a matter of getting the
right tips.

I had a pair, but they didn't ring my bell or last very long. Comfort is a
big issue.

Any specific reason for headphones rather than earphones? I use Etymotic
ER6 earphones with my iPod. They're in your price range (a little
cheaper than the Etymotic ER4s) and they pretty much completely seal
your ear canal.
The ER6 are 48 ohms.
Etymotic also make the ER6i, which are 16 ohms, have a hyped
low-frequency response, and are available in white.

I always bring a Grado headphone on vacation to listen to my kids' ipods
with - I sure ain't gonna use their ear goopy podphones. The 2 ipods
I've plugged the Grado's (80 & 125) into sounded plenty nice.

I like having a pair of earbuds in my computer bag all the time. It's
a pain carrying around big headphones. I bought the $40 version that
Apple sells. These are different from the ones that come with the Ipod
and much better. They are pretty comfortable with their rubber cups
instead of the hard plastic buttons. They sound pretty good as well.
I tried the cheaper Koss and the slightly more expensive Sony's and
found that I could never listen to them. The Apple ones are very
pleasant sounding. They do a good job of cutting out exterior sounds
as well.
