Putting new subs and amp in the 96 ford explorer ediie bauer

Hello,
I have been messing around with my 96 eddie bauer ford explorer and
was wondering if it is possible to take out the JBL amp and sub that is in
the very back and replace it with aftermarket sub and amp. I have had some
people say you can and some say id have to replace the sterio. Just lookin
for suggestions thanks....

I dropped out of the business in '93, but most of Ford's stuff i saw
afterwards remained similar for the next few years...

That said, the Ford/JBL systems I worked with had a neat little 4 channel
amp for the full range, and a larger mono sub amp. Both were designed with
Zapco's help ,IIRC, and were the most well-built factory amps I had seen up
to that time. Preamp level output from the head unit was a balanced 800mV
signal.

To use it, just unplug the input from the factory amp and use either:
1) a line driver with a balanced or isolated input, or
2) an isolation transformer (as some preamp-level Ground Loop Isolators use)
3) an aftermarket amp with balanced RCA input.

I did a couple in my day, with no issues. Be sure the aftermarket amplifier
you are considering will deliver full power with less than 1 Volt of input
signal.
