The owner of my studio wants to add a digital mixing console. Our current
setup is built around Nuendo software and an 8 channel Nuendo/RME
interface. We use a Mackie 1642 for monitoring, routing and extra mic
preamps. Mixing is done in the computer. As an addition to this system
I'm trying to figure out what the Yamaha 02R96 does better than the
Tascam DM3200. Yes, I know that you get 8 more channels and 8 more
faders. But the functionality appears to be similar. We have no interest
in the surround mixing features. Also the DM3200 can act as a firewire
audio interface to the computer, which it does not appear the 02R96 can
do. So what is it that makes the 02R96 worth about three times the price
of the DM3200?

Haven't used the 3200 so don't know about that one. However: as an
owner of both a DM24 (soon to be former owner) and a 01V96 as well as
having installed and extensively used several DM24s and 02R96s for
other people, I can tell you that the Yamahas are WAY more reliable and
pack more features. Every single DM24 I mentioned has been to the shop
at least once - some three times. Haven't had a SINGLE problem with
the Yammies though. I don't know much about the FW option on the
TASCAMs but given the history we've had with these boards, I wouldn't
even want to try using it as an interface. I'm not going to recite the
feature differences between the two boards here, you can get that off
the website, but as far as my experience goes, I am in the process of
getting rid on my own DM24 and of the 6 or so that were bought on my
watch only 2 are still in operation. All the others have been replaced
by Yamaha. My only gripe with the 01V96 is the lack of a built in
talkback. If TASCAM has changed their ways and the 3200 is actually a
piece ready for the market as opposed to the beta-version crap they've
been releasing the last few years, then perhaps the 3200 is an option
for you. Perhaps someone who has used one (or several, preferably) can
tell you. If not, save yourself the headache and go with the Yamaha.

The O2R96 (version 2.11 or later) can be connected via a firewire connection
if a Yamaha mLAN card is installed in the mixer giving you 16 channels in
and out. £300ish in the UK.

The Tascam DM2400 looks a lot more like an Yamaha DM1000 equivalent than an
02R96 equivalent, to me.

A comparitively intuitive & way-more-easily comprehended user interface.

Consdering the price difference the comparison of the two is absurd.
Yamaha has a smaller digial mixer that is in the same price range as
the tascam and I have used both of those and the tascam has a leg up on
that one. Can't remember the exact model number on the lower end
Yamaha.
