Hey.

I am looking to get hold of a new Pre to use as a bass guitar amp front
end. The contenders are

The FMR RNP. I've used these and am a fan of the sound I get from it.

The Avalon U5. I've used this as a DI and liked it a lot, but never as
a preamp.

The Summit TD-100. Never used this but have heard good things.

Also, things like the Great River units look incredible but are a
little over the current budget, would consider it though. What are your
opinions on using these for the purpose?

It will mostly be a standard US Jazz bass, running into a power amp
(possibly Crest CA6).

The RNP (and great river!) has the greater headroom (+66dB vs. +30'ish
of the others)... What would you do?

I really like the summit stuff. I found avalon to be overpriced, and
not too good on the maintenance side.

I like Summit too. And the Crest CA6 is also a nice amp.

I use an Alembic, either the F1X or F2B. I have also used the RNP, which
is nice, but I like have some tone controls, etc. The Alembics just seem
to make everything sound nice!

Will everyone please submit the make and model of a preamp to this
thread? No duplicates please. If yours is taken, pick something else
out of a catalog or web site. No matter tha you've never heard it
before.

I recommend the Crockwood Paintpot. Or whatever.

The Pierce Amalgum 202 is utterly flocked with featurettes.

I've never heard the Amalgum, but I'm rather fond of my Pierce Arrow.
