View Full Version : dbx vs modern CD

I was listening to an old tape trying to determine whether or not it was
recorded with dbx encoding.
Then I unfurrowed my brow and laughed.
The recording from the 1980's encoded with dbx sounded just like a modern
recording without it. Overpumped compression and a sizzly high end.
Except that I can engage the decoder and rectify the old tape.

Hmmm, perhaps soon we'll see the 'dbx pod', which converts MP3 back to
..wav, then 2:1 expansion. Are you listening Mr. Jobs? You should, my last
name IS Wozniak...

Yeah, I think this is what Bobby Zimmerman was on about recently.

It wouldn't help. It's a different kind of compression.

I have a DBX box, not handy, that has both variable compression or expansion.
Its not a decoder. The best expansion box I have is a Sony or Panasonic,
I think, again not handy. It sounds much better at producing an expanded sound,
that sound less pumpy than the DBX.

Are you confusing "compression" with "compression"? :-)

As in "data compression" versus "dynamics compression".

2:1 audio expansion, a la the dbx decode process in the original post. Tho
MP3 to wav conversion would be digital expansion, right?

Whatever "digital expansion" means?
