I bought a stereo system at a garage sale the other
day. 80's styled Harmon Kardon hk 330i with
cassette deck and TT. I need another stereo like a
hole in the head but what made me buy it was the
price which was 8 bucks AND the speakers which are
B&W DM 601's.

I remember looking at these speakers back in the
80's and really loving them. They were at the same
time and as I recall in the same class as DCM Time
Windows, KEF's and M&K's.

Anyone have any experience with these for monitoring
in a studio? Are audiophile speakers some how
unsuited for studio work?

My history with studio speakers goes to 1980 when it
seems we all bought speakers because everyone else
had them. There were "industry standard" speakers.
JBL 4311's, urie813's, Westlakes, Tannoys.
Auratones and ns10's were part of that too. It
wasn't that they were the best. It was more
important that everyone have the same reference.
Way too many choices for me these days.

Little brothers of what Abbey Road was using a while ago.

I liked the original 801 speakers for monitoring work. They had a nice
clean midrange. Even so, you could tell they were boxes.

I think you will find the 601s are similar... a little hangover in the
lower midrange and much more restricted bass, but still not bad for their
size.

The real problem with all of these speakers is that they are easy to damage
compared with studio monitor designs that have elaborate protection. So
be very careful repatching.

Not the 601s, but I've used the flagship Nautilus 802s a lot at
Skywalker Sound & they're very very fine speakers. Very detailed, good
midrange clarity, non-hyped.

No, as long as you don't get nuts with volume. In general I find
audiophile speakers vastly superior to "studio monitors" in terms of
detail, clarity, spectral balance, dynamic accuracy & a sense of three
dimensionality. Then again, I don't mix pop music, so a lot of what is
important to me is meaningless to others.
