I recently ran across these at an acquaintance's home- he was moving
and had these stored there, and didn't have the space at his new
apartment for them. I ended up getting these speakers and a huge
Kenwood amp for $50 lot price.

Does anyone know what vintage they are ? They have a JVC logo on them.

They have one large 12" woofer, 2 mids, 2 tweeters, and one tiny piezo
tweeter- also (2) adjustable crossovers for mid and high, and (2) bass
ports.

I gave them a good 3 hour test run last weekend- imaging with my SEP
tube amp was amazing.

Are they worth anything ? They also have removeable front grills with
wooden lattice design.

thanks in advance !

**Yep. The 1960s and 1970s school of Japanese speaker building. Whack as
many drivers on a baffle as is reasonably possible to do. Instead of
engineering a proper crossover, whack in a few more drivers and hope for the
best. Whilst the Americans and the British were actually figuring out how to
build quite competent speakers, the Japanese were just buggering around with
rubbish like this.

**Bull****. The driver arrangment precludes the possibility of decent
imaging. Ever. Go compare them to a pair of AR 3a speakers and learn how a
decent speaker of the time can sound.

>
> Are they worth anything ?

**Nope. They are 1960s, Japanese crap. Most of the Japanese manufacturers
dabbled in this type of speaker for awhile. They are the reason why Japanese
loudspeakers were never well regarded, until Yamaha released the quite
excellent NS1000.

They also have removeable front grills with
> wooden lattice design.

**Hmmph. Dust collectors.

Whatever you paid for them, it was far too much. They're junk. If the
chemicals used in the manufacture of the wood used, was not so deadly, they
might be OK for firewood.

I paid $50 for the speakers and Kenwood amp together- the amp sold for
$100

so how did I pay too much ? I made 50 bucks.

And you obviously never heard a pair of these.

Well, at $100, you paid about 4X what both pieces might be worth
together. That would be how you overpaid. Furthermore, if you are
stating that you ran these things through your Akai 7.5
watt-at-clipping-at-best tape-deck for the results you describe, not
only is your judgement impaired as evidenced by your purchase, but your
ears are made of aged pot-metal. Even the tin-eared would reject those
beasts, even if driven with adequate power.

These are "white van" speakers with a JVC badge, and that would be
giving them far more credit than than is likely.

Peter, I don't get over here to "RAT" very much anymore, but it is clear
from your comment above that either you are becoming senile, or you need
to take some night school classes in remedial reading and simple consumer
math.

On what factual basis do you make that statement, there are a lot of
variables involved that I doubt you have a clue about?

yo, dumb ass Peter, I SOLD the amp for $100

I only paid $50 for the amp AND speakers together in a package deal
buy. $50 total

so that yielded a $50 gain- and I still have the speakers.

you are one dumb stupid ass, you are....

my thoughts exactly, John. I posted that I bought the speakers and
amp for $50 total price- then sold only the amp for $100- yielding a
$50 gain- and he takes it as a purchase price I made for $100

assbackwards- and he has the cognitive skills of a kindergarten kid.

So, you ripped someone off by selling them junk. And you are proud of
it.

Congratulations. You overpaid for the both, made a profit by finding a
bigger fool than you...

Makes all sorts of sense.

I noticed a pair of Coral bookshelfs in a pawn shop, and thought I'd
found the only good japanese speakers I know of from that era. But
after pulling a back, I found a two way instead of a full range Coral.
They probably sounded pretty good, anyway, being well build paper
drivers with alnico magnets, though I left them there, not having room
for any more speakers which aren't definate keepers.

We install random speakers into our systems of the moment. We may grin
or scowl. The moment passes :)

I heard something I liked, once. OK, more than once. I am an ear slut!

Happy Ears!

PS None of the birch 1x3 want to be forgotten ... but they stick to the
MDF in any case :)

Al:

Be a bit careful with this one. Some speakers are cheap irredeemable
crap. Some are expensive irredeemable crap. Very few speakers are good
at any price. Very damned few speakers are inexpensive and good. Even
fewer are inexpensive and very good. Those that are *tend* to be
vintage speakers mostly sold by those who either no longer have room
for them or no longer listen to them.

However, there remains that class of speakers that never were good but
were mighty shiny and mighty big and mighty heavy. Just as a monkey, a
crow or a pack-rat will choose the bright, shiny bit of tinfoil over
the dull $20 bill, there are those purportedly human monkeys that will
continue to be impressed with size and weight, understanding nothing
about quality and performance. And just like the monkeys will chatter
and leap about throwing their feces bragging about that bit of foil.
