View Full Version : Stereo Cuts Out at High Volumes

July 29th 06, 09:37 PM
I have an Infinit Basslink 200W hooked up directly to my battery (amp
is built in) and a JVC headunit with 2 Rockford Fosgate 3" and 2 RF
5.25" connected. When I turn the volume up, there is no distortion, but
the stereo cuts out on louder parts of the song. It almost sounds like
a CD skipping, but it's from my iPod, so I know it's not that. It
happens with CD's too.

Any ideas?

maybe the gain is set too high?

I'd re-ground the deck to the chassis instead of using the factory
harness ground.. What are you using for the remote turn-on?

could be battery pooping out at high volumes.
everythings hooked up fine.

August 15th 06, 09:30 PM
remote turn for sub is wired to head unit.

i can recheck the ground for the head unit but im pretty sure it's a
good connection.

what about my battery?

also, the more powerful I set the gain for the sub, the more it skips.
im sure im not getting enough power, but how do i get more?

You should probably invest in another battery, and a capacitor.

I would take your car to a shop and have them test your battery and
alternator first, because you may have affected the alternator by
drawing too much power.

If they say your battery and alternator are fine, then the capacitor is
pretty much all that you need.

How big the capacitor needs to be is determined by the wattage of your
system... I have a 55 farad Blitz audio capacitor, but thats because my
system draws lots of power ;) You'll more than likely need something
quite less potent.

Cheers.

55 cap..lol thats crazy..you just need 1-2 fast reacting car audio
batterys..lol for less than 1/2 the money as that cap..lol
i never laffed so hard..55cap..lol stop it...lol
thats stupid.....

55cap...lol you must be drawing over 8000rms to need that..lol
or what 400amps...lol

Considering you're using WebTV, I'll refrain from using big words.

I mistyped 55, it's a BZ CAP 500 -- 50 farad hybrid capacitor.

It only ran me $130.00 USD.

I have a 50 farad capacitor because I want to be able to expand without
worrying about power.

Right now I'm only pushing 2000 watts RMS but there is very little pause
between heavy bass hits in the music I listen to, so a little 2 farad
cap would not do me much good.

1st its a off brand right...lol
i bought a cap. lanzar 2.4f.
figure itll do for 40-50a.
theres only about 4 cap brands id trust. n not not over priced 50%.
my cap $88.it was a steal.
i cant imagine needing over a 15cap if its a good brand.
webtv, i bought it yrs ago when it was the new thing. it works so i use
it.
had it over 6yrs now.

50-55cap lol no difference enstein...lol
i see you a big brained boy..
you wanta expand ya system to 6000watts someday..lol
you'll have to buy more batterys reguardless for that.lol
you'd be better off buying a faster response
battery..lol
made for big systems..

don't waste your money on a capacitor, it's not going to solve your
problem. and with only 200 watts I doubt power supply in general is
the problem.

does the music skip out just on bass notes, or intermittenly throughout
the song regardless of information playing? What guage power and ground
wire are you using?

it skips during the most intense parts of the song

i have 10 gauge wiring for both. and also remember that I have 4
speakers being powered by my head unit as well as the 200W basslink

if you turn your A/C on along with your headlights, does it skip even
more? does your car have a voltmeter on the dashboard, or can you
manually check it at the battery while you have the system on? just
trying to find out what voltage your car is running at when this
happens.

where do you have the power wires for the head unit run to? does the
whole cd player shut off when this happens or does the face still light
up but the sound is just gone?

also, in case none of those seem to be the problem, do you have access
to another head unit that you can swap out for to test and see if the
head unit itself has a problem?

the headunit wires go to my fusebox. the player stays on, the sounds
just skips out.

i don't have access to another headunit.

and i don't have a voltometer on my dashboard or one at my house.

In case no one has explained this to you yet, Bob Wald is our resident troll
and he is VERY annoying and his sole purpose in life is to annoy well
meaning people like you and me. MANY of the regulars here have him blocked
(if you are using a newsreader with that function like OE) like I do. But,
unfortunately, we see his ridiculous posts when someone like you responds to
him.

I would ignore him, if I were you.

I don't understand what you mean.

If you think I'm making this up about Bob I would suggest you take a look at
ALL his other posts, and you decide for yourself. I wasn't trying to be a
dick or anything, I was truly trying to do you a favor.

10ga.. its ok for what your doing i guess.. but i do my stuff with all
8ga.. to handle what i have n give me alil extra room if i trade up to a
larger amp.
i dont go into 4ga or larger cause youll have to upgrade your batterys
if you go there.. n i'm not going down that road.
you might have to upgrade more than batterys if you using 4ga.+...
when i say pgrade batterys.i mean adding more batterys too.

I have almost the same problem... But with cd's . It sounds like it
skips but the audio never loses time.. Like it gets muted for a sec.
Mine seems to happen randomly, sometimes frequently sometimes not. Its
something electrical I believe because sometimes pushing in the clutch,
or the brake pedal.. which is switched,(clutch/starter interlock - brake
lights) will cause it to happen.. But still happens at random during
normal operation.. Bugs the hell outta me...
