View Full Version : Subwoofer Boxes (box vs fiberglass)

Jason K

As far as SQ goes is there a difference in a wooden box say built to 1.2
ft^2 opposed to a fiberglass enclosure also built to ~1.3 ft^2? (both
sealed)

Any tips for making a fiberglass enclosure as good or closer to as good as
the wooden box? (thicker walls, poly filling, subwoofer aiming?)

With a fiberglass enclosure, I guess it would be easier to aim the woofers
in any direction. Does this make a difference? i've heard the term stereo
bass before but I don't know how much weight that carries atm.

Fiberglass sub enclosures are for posers that want their systems looking
pretty rather then sounding good. You can always use poly fill on a wood box
to shape it and smoothen it. Stereo bass huh? That's funny. I guess you need
and left and right woofer to get stereo bass or maybe you just need to crank
up some stereo mc's to get stereo bass. I have quadraphonic bass , you know
dat quad city knock.

You didn't end up answering any of my questions. Why does fiberglass have
to be for posers? Why can't fiberglass be for guys who doesn't want two 1.2
ft^2 sitting in the middle of my trunk when i can make one that fits in the
sidewell nicely?

Go have fun with your "quadraphonic bass"... yea i'm talking about the one
"dat quad city knocks" but if you're gonna post a reply at least do it with
a slight hint of intelligence.

If you want to fiberglass then do just that, what are you looking for
approval? A slight hint of intelligence? Aren't you the one that was asking
about stereo bass?

1) I mentioned stereo bass because I've heard it somewhere and I even did
it with skepticism. And I quote "i've heard the term stereo bass before but
I don't know how much weight that carries atm"
2) I'm not looking for approval, I'm looking to build a great sounding SQ
competing car. A fiberglass enclosure would fit me better in terms of space
in the trunk but if a wooden box makes the SQ better, I'll gladly do that
instead

My question is perfectly legitimate and I have no idea why you find it so
humuours and "stupid"

If you go thick enough with fiberglass the sq will be fine. It will cost you
alot more then a wood box and it's a ****load of work. Make sure that you
use "Long Strand Fiberglass" 3/4 to 1" thinkness will do the trick. Oh and use
a slow hardener to help avoid air bubbles in your molds.

Don't worry about Howdy, he's like that to everyone. We just put up with
him. ;) (Hey Howdy, time to put away your 4th-of-July-Car, huh?)

Anyhoo, as far as SQ there is no difference between wood and fiberglass.
Remember, the only purpose of a box is to hold a volume of air and do it by
NOT RESONATING as resonance of the enclosure means wasted energy (it takes
energy to vibrate an enclosure, energy that would be better turned into
SOUND). The ideal enclosure would be made of granite.

Fiberglass is superior in ONE respect, however. It is far lighter than wood
and therefore it is preferable if you are into performance and wish to make
your car lighter. And with the cost of gas these day, WHO ISN'T?

Nah, I put it away after the labour day parade. Did you install your 99 cent

Not yet, still waiting for delivery. And it WAS $23 (with shipping)!!!!
You have to admit, THIS was a SMOKING deal. I got the tweeters I REALLY
WANTED from the beginning AND a pair of JL midbass drivers that EXACTLY
match the drivers I currently use up front so I am going to use them as my
rear-fill (without tweeters, of course). So my rear-fill will be
timber-matched to my fronts. Here is my AWESOME deal:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270002877050&ru=http://search.ebay.com:80/270002877050_W0QQbsZSearchQQcatrefZC6QQcoactionZco mpareQQcoentrypageZsearchQQcopagenumZ1QQfclZ3QQfpo sZ98292QQfromZR10QQfrppZ50QQfsclZ1QQfsclZ1QQfsooZ1 QQfsopZ1QQfssZ0QQfstypeZ1QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQsacatZQ 2d1QQsacurZ0QQsadisZ200QQsargnZQ2d1QQsaslcZ2QQsasl opZ1QQsbrftogZ1QQsofocusZunknownQQsorefinesearchZ1 QQfviZ1

I already have a guy who is going to buy my Kenwood's (that I currently use
as rear-fill) for $25. So I am going to MAKE MONEY on this entire deal.
Not to mention the fact that someone may be interested in buying a single MB
Quart PTD 25 tweeter.

Ebay RULES!!!!!!

So far, I have been pretty lucky. It's important to check out the seller.
Make sure his rating is high and has few neg. feedback. I have bought a
couple of things I do regret, but that is FAR outweighed by the great deals
I have got (I bought two brand new $250 a piece MTX subwoofers for $80 for
the pair, this has been my best deal to date) . So far, so good.... I have
also bought some amps on Ebay I have been very happy with.

This far I ended up with about 20 broken amps from ebay.

Thanks for the help guys! Howdy, learn to have an open mind :P

Now to clarify on stereo bass and my findings... yes i did some research.
A) stupid me, should have known from the beginning. bass that low cannot
be located by a human ear unless it has distortion. so stereo bass just
means you can hear distortion from two subwoofers. however, believe it or
not, many people believe in it.
http://www.google.ca/search?q=stereo+bass&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official
19 million, six hundred thousand to be exact.
