View Full Version : Input overload??????
I just got two new audiobahn 12in subs with a soundstorm 2800 amp. I
installed it and turned it on and when I turn up the volume on my head
unit not even half way up and my amp turnes into protection mode and in
the manuel it says that the amp will go into protection mode when it
gets too hot (which it wasnt) or when it has an input overload. How am
I having an input overload when my head unit and my amp settings are
not even turned up that much?? Its really annoying not being able to
feel the power of two 12's.

What impedence are your subs and how are they wired?

THERE'S YOUR PROBLEM!!!!!!
When bridged, your Soundstorm amp is stable into 4 ohms. However, when you
connect all four coils in parallel (parallel-parallel) that will give you a
1 ohm impedance which your amp will IMMEDIATELY recognize and IMMEDIATELY go
into protection mode. Trust me, this is much better than the old days when
we didn't have these sophisticated protection circuits and your amp would
have played for about 3 minutes and then melted into a pile of goo (it would
have heated up so fast that even the thermal protection circuits would not
have saved it).
These is an easy fix here. Connect your subs in a series/parallel
arrangement and that will give you four ohms. In other words, take each sub
and connect both coils in series (pos. to neg and then neg to pos.). If you
do this with each sub, you will then have two 8 ohm subs essentially. Then
connect both subs together in parallel, this will give you a 4 ohm impedance
which is perfect for your amp.
If you are confused, check out this group's FAQ as there is an explanation
and diagrams of this: http://www.mobileaudio.com/rac-faq/

Misfit knows all about Soundstorm , it's his fav brand of amps.

"Misfit knows all about Soundstorm , it's his fav brand of amps."
Misfit? Now THAT'S funny.
Tony
I wired the subs in series/parallel pattern and my amp was able to
recieve a little more juice from the head unit but it still turns off
into protection mode quickly. Could it be a grounding problem? Im just
shootin blanks at this point to be honest haha.

this is how i wired it up. Is that the correct wiring pattern?

Yes, that's a hoot.

Yes, that's the correct configuration. It SHOULD work. The next thing you
want to do is check is the voltage at the amp when it goes into protection
mode. Is it dropping below 12 volts? If so, by how much? If so, this
could represent a grounding problem with your amp (or your battery) or some
other problem with your electrical system. But this would be the next area
I would investigate.
