View Full Version : Absolute Vs. Memphis Car Audio

I've got a customer who wants to purchase some Memphis Car Audio
speakers for his Suburban, but that's not a brand that I carry. My
supplier says that Memphis Car Audio is a low-level brand on par with
Pyle or Absolute. I'm actually not very familiar with Absolute,
either, though it is a brand I've started carrying in the last month
due to the price point that it hits.

Does anyone have any experience with MCA, and Absolute/Pyle that they
can share?

Thanks!

memphis is miles above pyle. by the looks of absolute's products they
look to be at pyle level. your supplier is mistaken.

i will third that!
memphis is miles above anything that pyle could even dream about
producing.

i used to have a memphis 16st1000d, pushing 2 JL audio 12W3's
and i replaced it with a JL audio 500/1, cause i wanted it for my 10W7
that i was upgrading to soon in the future.
damn, i think the memphis hit harder and cleaned on the2 12W3'a they
where hooked upto, versus the JL500/1 on the 12W3's

but, now that i got rid of the 12W3's cause my 10W7 is now installed on
the 500/1,
i have often thought to myself, "how would the 16st1000d of sounded on
the 10W7?"
in my opinion i think i would of been very happy with that set-up just
as well, if not a little bit happier?

but you live and learn.
and money isn't as easy to come by now as it was in the past.

Pyle used to be big in the speaker world in the late 80's, early 90's. Pyle's
amplifiers are alright for lite duty stuff like midranges or 6x9's. Pyle's
head units are totally crap with a high failure rate. Memphis is right up
there with Power-Acoustic mid-grade.

Thanks, guys. I was very leary that Memphis would be comparable to
Pyle and that someone would actually request that brand specifically.

But, since I don't carry MCA -- how do we feel about the
quality/performance of Alpine to MCA, close?

With almost all brands, they both have different lines for different target
markets. How can we compare the products of one manufacturer to another if
we don't know what products you are talking about?
Memphis makes some budget stuff I think is garbage. They also make some
things that some people would consider top of the line.

What price range of products are you looking for a comparison on? Do you
want to compare a $300 Alpine amplifier to a $300 Memphis amplifier? Throw
us a bone here.

As far as Pyle goes, think Pyramid. Pyle sells their amplifiers while
marketing them as super high output. For example, they have a 500 x 2
amplifier that is really only 90 x 2 RMS @ 14.4 volts. This amplifier might
hit 500 watts if it's struck by lightning, but never in the real world.

When Alpine or Memphis markets a product they'll market it for what you can
really achieve. Memphis has a 4000 watt RMS amplifier that will produce 4000
watts RMS at 1 ohm @ 14.4 volts.

After re-reading this post, it probably sounds like I'm being arrogant and
that isn't my intention. Please don't take it the wrong way.

I don't take it the wrong way, Rob, as soon as you pointed out that I
hadn't given any specifics I realized that makes it hard to give any
comparisons.

What I was trying to do was get an overall feel of how the two brands
would compare given similar price points -- and I'm talking speakers,
here. If I have a component set of Alpines for $199.00, I'd like to
know if they are a better or worse *value* than a similarly priced set
from MCA. As I think about it, that's probably a really difficult
question to answer, as well.

What I wanted to avoid was someone asking for a certain (high) level of
quality and me saying, "Hey, I don't have MCA, but I'd happily get you
these really nice Sony XPlods." Similarly, if MCA has the general
quality characteristics of Pyle (A brand that I've got no problem with,
for the price), then I don't want to suggest the guy buy a set of
Kappas. I'm looking for more of a holistic answer, is what I'm saying.
