View Full Version : Old school sub vs new tech
I'm putting together a hodge-podge system for my wife.
Here's what I have:
eclipse 56050
Monitor Audio Car6
Planet Audio Tube Hybrid powering the Monitor audio
Planet Audio 400W powering the sub
the question is concerning the sub
I own an old school Elemental Design E10k.14
(Carbon fiber flat coned)
and
a Phoenix Gold Xenon X12D2 modern sub
Has anyone heard both?
I know it's a long shot, but I don't have an empty 10" and 12" box to
audition them myself

The Elemental Designs flat cone is sexy....There's no question about which
one I would use.
Given the same power, the 12" Phoenix will give you more output though.
I can't comment on how either will sound. Maybe try asking your question at
http://www.icixsound.com/vb/.
You'll probably get a lot more people who have heard both.

Well, if you are asking which sub you should go with, I would tend to say go
with the PG because A) it is a larger sub, and B) PG is a well respected
brand with a history of making quality products while Elemental Designs (on
the other hand) is a much smaller company and frankly I have heard very
little about it and know NOTHING about the quality of their products. When
you say this Elemental Designs sub is "old school", that strikes me as odd
because I find no reference to Elemental Designs in any of my Buyer's Guides
before 2000, so it appears this sub may not be too "old school". But in
any case, when in doubt go with the tried and true.

Which is a perilious thing to base a decision on :) After all, somebody
might think the same of Brax or Audison...note - I'm using them as a
representative example, not comparing eD to them at all.
The 10K is a very good value, and easily is a "modern" sub (hell, it's
only 3 years old, that doesn't count as "modern" anymore? :) )
I've been running an eD e12a.22 for three years now, and have been
thoroughly impressed with it...but I wouldn't touch their current
drivers with a stick now.

and i wouldn't touch those A series of drivers with a stick, and by
stick i mean more than 200rms, despite how sexy those cones look....
things were designed horribly when it comes to strength & reliability.

They had very little issues with the 12a. Now the 15a is an entirely
different story from what I've read.
I had a 12a for over a year with a Rockford Fosgate 1500bd on it and it
never skipped a beat (pun intended).
