I know, this isn't the right group, but I know that some of you guys are
REAL knowledgeable about things like this and I'm more comfortable here. ;)

I have a Philips 34" widescreen direct-view HDTV. It has 2 component inputs
(AV-3 and 4), but one (the AV-4) is called a 2fh 1080i video input. I just
got HDTV cable today and when I try connecting my HDTV cable to it (with
component RGB jacks) all I get is a black screen. I HAVE been using
component video with my DVD player on AV-3 and that works fine, also my HDTV
cable works just fine on AV-3 using component video as well. What's going
on? I'd really like to use both (AV-3 and AV-4), obviously, as I want to
use component video inputs for both my DVD player and my HDTV cable (also, I
tried hooking my DVD player up to AV-4 and I get a black screen as well).

The 2fh video input is strange. Besides the regular 3 RGB inputs, there is
also a V and H (I think), they ARE NOT the audio inputs, but they are
another pair of RCA's. I HAVE NO IDEA what these plug into.

Is there any way I can use this (the AV-4) input? What is this 2fh
business?

Thank you in advance,

MOSFET

This is BNC conenctor (5 plugs). I have it in my PE7700 projector. This is
used to connect computer VGA output. The standard is called VGA-BNCx5 Not
sure why this is there in my projector since it already has VGA input
(monitor).

PS: If you CC the post to rec.video You will get complete answer

Your sync is sent through the H and V channels (horizontal and vertical
respectively) - it's used primarily on much larger units than what you
have - must be there to entice people.

Typical VGA output is RGBHV - your way to use it would be to find a up
converter to take your RGB input and convert it to RGBHV.

That's what I know of it anyway, nowhere near an expert though.

I too have a Phillips hdtv 55" with the same inputs, or almost the same
as you. I have av1,2,3,4 and Tuners A & B.I do not have an input as you
call 1080i. All hd inputs are capable of transmitting 1080i,720 and 480.
it all depends what the broadcast station is sending out. Did you not
get a manual with your set? I did, and its very intimidating at
first...but if you have it I suggest you read it before attaching
cables. BTW, my set is almost 3 years old. I believe you were asking
about a 5 BNC cable for the tv. I found it does not make any difference,
so I just use the typical vga input. As far as the inputs..mine has AV-1
& AV-2( no components ) okay mainly for vcr ( mine is on AV-2 ) Av-3 is
for my hd with conponents cable , AV-4 is for my DVD with conponent
connections. Why do you want to connect your cable to the other, if its
working fine as you claim. The rest could be for ota ( outdoor antenna
) if you have one, or another vcr.

If you have the manual I would read it. It might be that you have to turn
that video input on as they do on Mitsubishi tv's. Something else that you
might need to check is that the component video needs to be switched from
RGB to component. Even they we think of RGB as red, green and blue it
isn't. Component video is red, green and blue where RGB is the truly a 15
pin cable or a component cable with no vertical and horizontal sync. If you
use the AV4 input check to see that it isn't selectable. If you want email
me the model # and I will see if I can get a copy of the manual to see if
there is anything that needs to be turned on in order for it to work.

Turns out that my digital cable converter box was not set for 1080i output,
this was the source of the problem. All that needed to be done was
recalibrate my cable converter box for 1080i output and it works fine
through that input (and looks ****ING INCREDIBLE, I might add, MUCH better
than progressive-scan DVD). Thanks to everyone that helped!
