View Full Version : Amp and Sub matchup

April 12th 06, 02:47 AM
Hey there all...first of all, let me apologize for this request. I'm
sure you guys that do this for a living get really tired of new guys
like myself with some very basic question they can't figure out. For
being patient, i say thank you!

Ok, my issues. I recently acquired (not stolen, i assure you!) some
car stereo equipment that I'm in the process of installing into my 2002
Honda Accord. In exchange for my old police scanner, I acquired two
15" Audiobahn SE DVC subwoofers (model AW1571SE). They are each in
their own boxes and each has two sets of speaker cables coming from
each sealed box (presumably one from each voice coil).

It also came with a Soundstream laboratories F4400 four channel, 1600
watt amp. The guy who owned them said it all sounded very good with
each of the speaker wires hooked into each of the channels on the amp.
HOWEVER, I do not want to rock the neighbors, I do not want to be heard
blocks away, I do not want to lose my entire trunk! Therefore, I want
to only install one of the subs in my trunk.

My main question: how should I hook up the one box and its two sets of
speaker wires to the four channel amp? I don't want my trunk catching
fire or anything wild happening, hence why I'm trying to get some
expert advice here.

Also, the guy gave me a 1.75 farad capacitor he used. Would this be
necessary/beneficial for my proposed setup? If so, how do I charge the
*******? haha....thanks in advance for any potential help and I
apologize for my lack of knowledge on this topic and my spree of
questions! if you need any further info about the items to figure out
my predicament, don't hesitate to let me know!

Thanks again!

Andy

Is this your amplifier?
http://www.soundstormlab.com/home/catalog/public_html/images/prods/print/f4400_500.jpg

That would be Sound Storm, not Soundstream. That amplifier is 160 watts x 4
RMS @ 4 ohms. Personally, I would choose a different amplifier which I could
bridge to 1 channel and run 1 subs 2 ohm voice coils in series for a 4 ohm
load.

If you want to stick to the amplifier you have, you could wire each voice
coil to the 2 channels after you bridge the amplifier to 2 channels. Just
make sure the gains for the 2 channels are equal.

I don't have a manual for that amplifer, so I can't tell you how to bridge
it. I'll give you an idea of what to look for: Near the outputs, look for a
switch to bridge 2 of the channels, you'll probably have to use the + from
channel A and the - from channel B on one voice coil. Do the same for
channels C and D.

Let us know how it turns out.

Good Luck,
Rob

That's the one! sorry about they typo there (soundstream vs.
soundstorm)....i'm sure it's all crap! haha. I'll see if i can track
down a manual online for that swapmeet amp!

Thanks for your prompt and informative response!
