View Full Version : Sensitivity Numbers for a Box?
MOSFET
March 30th 06, 06:59 AM
I was surfing Ebay and came across this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/CAR-AUDIO-TRIPLE-15-INCH-HOLES-SUBWOOFER-ENCLOSURE-BOX_W0QQitemZ9705685578QQcategoryZ50569QQrdZ1QQcmd ZViewItem
A triple 15" enclosure (WITHOUT SUBS). They give a wattage AND SENSITIVITY
RATING for this box. That made absolutely NO SENSE to me so I VERY POLITELY
asked how this number was derived and I got a VERY RUDE response saying it's
obvious, a dumb question, and I should learn more about car audio.
Anyway, it's kind of funny. I'm trying to imagine how you apply one watt to
a wooden box!

3000 WATTS
TRIPLE 15" HOLES
MDF INDUSTRIAL CONSTRUCTION
FREQ RES 20hZ - 200hz
INDUSTRIAL GRADE CARPET
COMPUTER TUNED ENCLOSURE
SENSITIVITY 93dB/W
SPRING LOADED SPEAKER TERMINALS
CHARCOAL GRAY CARPET COVERED
MEASURES 49 x 13 x 16
ALL MERCHANDISE IS EXACTLY THE SAME
Hmmm... I'm kinda wondering how they determine the power rating of a box
as well. Maybe put a wire on either end of it, plug it into the wall,
and see how much current it will absorb before it bursts into flame? I
wonder if it's actually resonating somewhere between 20 and 200Hz at
that point?
Each chamber is just a hair under 2.5 cu.ft... just off the top of my
head, that sounds a tad small for your average 15" sub.

LOL
I was willing to forgive the power rating because I SUPPOSE they may be
implying that the construction of the box can withstand internal pressure
levels that (for an average 15" subwoofer) work out to be about 3000 watts,
though this assumption is obviously a leap of faith.
Frequency response, WHEN NO TOLERANCES ARE GIVEN, is a pretty useless
specification, so that can really be ignored.
But the sensitivity rating was the spec that really got me. I was TRULY
CURIOUS how they got that 94dB figure. I mean, sensitivity means something
pretty damn specific and I want to know how it WAS DERIVED!

When you drop the box exactly one meter, you get a 94dB *THUD*, when
measured from one meter away.
Anyway, I emailed the guy a similar set of questions about his
specifications - we'll see if he's any nicer to me. I assume you saw his
feedback rating? 6 negatives just in the last month!

That's some funny ****. Sounds like you cought them in a lie and they know it.
From what I see in the countless neg feedback they should learn how to ship
the correct items to people.

I dug the "Computer tuned" Tuned to what ?! A dog fart? a 2.5 CuFt
enclosure will be fine for a modern 15" Many 12's for SQ are running .66 to
..5 CuFt, no problem.

I think what we've found here is a miracle of modern engineering AND
capitolizm!!!
I mean, really... Not ONLY does just the box have it's own
sensitivity, but the wood itself generates 3000 WATTS!!!!
Then, as if that weren't enough, you can buy this marvel for a mere
$25.00!!!!!!!!!
I. Am. Amazed.

Thanks Tony. It's petty, I know, but I secretly hoped some of you guys
would badger this jerk.
BTW, this was part of his reply to me:
however, most anyone with half a brain about car audio knows exactly why
that information is in the auction. Sorry to confuse you.

Apparently he's also selling porn. At least, I don't know of any other
times a seller uses the "private" actions.

Hi Matt,
It's a bit small for a home unit , but we get the bass boost in a
car... for my dime, the box is a little big for a 15" driver.

Well, it all depends entirely on the actual driver(s) you're using...
