View Full Version : Head unit that will do mp3 audio on DVD±R?

March 27th 06, 09:09 AM
I have found it a fairly nightmarish farce trying to find any head unit
that will play back mp3s recorded onto DVD plus or minus R but that
does NOT come with the expensive flippy-outy TFT monitor thingie.

But I don't want the expensive monitor thingie!

I am NOT interested in doing video with the DVD drive in the head unit,
at least not yet. (If an mp3 DVD capable head unit happens to be able
to drive a monitor and act as a DVD player with an RCA Video cable,
that is fine. I *might* make use of that in the future.)

But all I'm looking for now is an in-dash unit that can play mp3 files
burned to both CD-R and DVD. I don't need the whole video setup.

It seems tricky to find anything that EXPLICITLY states that the unit
is mp3 compatible when using an iso9660 DVD.

Can anyone name me some model numbers and/or manufacturers? Thank you
for any help!

I'm sure the Alpine DVA-9965, DVA-9861 or the DVA-9860 will do exactly what
you are looking for.

Then you'll have to wait until it becomes a more common standard. Right now,
company-think is CD=audio, DVD=video. If they made a DVD player without a
screen at the moment, they would sell like cold-cakes.

I'd say it'll be around Christmas when they become a bit more common.
DVD-Audio is only starting to be really pushed now...

Along with the three Alpine units I stated in my previous post, Pioneer has
the DVH-P5000MP.

Well, according to the Pioneer spec page on it:

The DVH-P5000MP will only do mp3 playback from a CD-ROM. So that one's
a no-go.

Will look into the alpines, though, thank you for the suggestion.

I see. That's jank.

Reading into the Alpine models, they seem to say the same thing. "The media
that this device can play back are CD-ROMs, CD-Rs and CD-RWs." Double jank.
That's puts a damper on my plans too, damnit.

There must be some reason behind it, let's find out why. ;)

Read other threads about limitations and just wondering what would be
involved in having a home unit wired to work in car, e.g. small 12DC ->
110AC at worst?

I have a cheap Norcent home dvd player seems to play just about anything.
Only limit I've found on it so far is 650 song limit in root or any one
sub-folder. It's replaced my cd player in stereo at home but provided you
have some input in car unit, should be no trouble to mount it somewhere as
it's not that often you need to change platters at 1000+ tunes a disk.

Actually, I do have a Philips "home" model that is compact and runs on
12 volts (came with a wall adapter), but perhaps it was meant to
optionally be run in an RV - the DVD-580:

Since I have a conversion van, this might be an option for use with an
AUX input on a new head unit, but the interface usage while driving
would be kind of clunky. I was hoping to get a dedicated head unit, but
perhaps I am ahead of the curve and will have to wait.

I agree. In fact, I will make a bold prediction: in just a handful of
years, I predict it will be difficult to find a disc player that is CD only.
We are already seeing this with MP3 integration. By next year I'm sure it
will be difficult to find a CD player that DOES NOT play MP3's as well. The
costs of adding formats in terms of hardware changes is virtually zero,
after all. There will simply be one type of commercially manufactured
laser-pickup that will include CD, MP3, DVD, DVD-Audio, etc. integration. I
can't wait.

There are at least 1/2 dozen of them here, noname but good quality, you
can read reviews on ebay.

Find out why... didn't I include that thought in a previous post that you
probably tried using to make fun of me, Steve? *Laugh* (:

But making inquiries and suggestions to the companies is a good thing. Their
ace 'product planners' probably aren't aware that there'll be a demand for
this product very shortly.

But still, the only thing I can think of being useful for DVD is that you
could eliminate CD changers from cars. An MP3 CD holds more than enough
music unless you're taking a VERY long drive indeed. (:

Heh. Don't forget the new Blu-Ray and it's competing standard... (: 50GB
worth of data per disc. Now that's going to be a lot of music...

That is a cool deal. I wonder how durable they are.

JVC makes one, no flippy screen, no animations, etc. It's about $280
MSRP last time I checked. KD-DV6200 is the one my friend has in his
car. Not sure if it's a current model, he's had his for about a year,
I don't see it available on CC's website or any of the other online
stores. Look for one that has "GigaMP3".

P.S. What happened to head units that acutally PLAY MUSIC??

Well, what about listening to the soundtracks of the movies while
you're driving?
Do stereo shops install the players with the screens in such a way that
it's possible?
My main problem with DVD HU is that if I can't use it at least with
reduced functionality
while in motion it's completely useless.
It's a hassle ripping DVD audio track then do a lossy conversion to mp3
because wav
won't fit on a CD. I'd rather copy a DVD now that the media is as cheap
or cheaper than CD-Rs.

Not sure about other HU's but the Alpine's I've seen and own will still
play the DVD but just not show it on the main screen unless you do the
brake/parking brake engage thing. It does this so that you can have
other monitors that show the video, like a fold-down one in the rear for
the kids. So even if you can't see it, you can hear everything that's
going on.

I don't have a remote control riding in the back seat yet. Can you
change between chapters/sections
of the movie while in motion ?
