View Full Version : inline RC fader or attenuator?

March 21st 06, 05:29 AM
I have an aftermarket head unit with only 1 set of RCAs leading back to
my trunk where my amp is. I would like fade control without lining
another set of RCAs. I am looking for a simple device that would allow
me to easily control front to rear fade that I can mount on my fold
down seat near my amp. Is there something like an RCA level fader or
attenuator? I did a search and could not find anything.
Thanks

Yep, you can do this, it's fairly easy. We had a similar question recently
about a subwoofer controller. I built one using just a simple potentiometer
I bought at Radio Shack. You will need two of these, of course, for the
left and right channel. You just insert the pots in-line with the RCA's.
You will then have two RCA's coming out of each pot (one for the fronts and
one for the rears). Go back and look for a post called something like "How
do I build a subwoofer controller". It's late and I don't feel like going
over all the details again, but if you can't find that let us know.

I never did finish that project, but it sounds good without it, so....
If you use a dual gang pot, no need to have two pots, unless you want
to have that much control over it.
bcae1.com has a link to a diagram http://www.bcae1.com/potentio.htm
Make sure you get a pot that matches your RCA input level impedence 15k
ohm, 25k ohm etc...

I made my own diagram, but beware, this has not been tested to prove it
works: http://members.tripod.com/thegoodales/id12.html
Save the pic, than open in paint or whatever to see it better. I was
told this would work, and I was also told moving the "blue" wire to the
middle connection on the pot and the "black" ground wires all on the
left connection would work too. Guess you'd have to find out for
yourself....

The only requirment is to use something in between.
Its got to be 10 times the RCA output Z, and preferably
1/10 the input Z. If the ouput
Z is 500 ohm and the input Z is 25 K, I
suggest using 5-10K pot. If you use a 25K pot, the
rotation will be less linear. However, there is some chance
of using a lower Z pot, will produce Bass attenuation
if there is an output coupling capacitor.
