View Full Version : Any Jazz Fans?

I am a fan of pretty much all kinds of music (with the exception of country,
and it has nothing to do with politics or anything like that, I just can't
seem to get into it).
My upgraded system sounds INCREDIBLE and I am enjoying listening to many
types of music I would normally not listen to (classical, opera, folk,
classic rock, etc.). For instance, I was never a Rolling Stones fan (my
wife is), but my system sounds so good that it draws me in, and I find I do
really enjoy that music.
So I'd like to listen to some Jazz, but I have almost nothing in the way of
a catalog. Can anyone recommend (AND THIS IS MOST IMPORTANT) some really
well recorded Jazz? I prefer simple drum/bass/piano ensembles. I am
frankly not big on singing (this applies to almost all of the formats I
enjoy, like techno, I like instrumentals). I have some Dave Bruebeck, but
the recordings were made so long ago they just don't sound that good. The
"problem" with my system is that it picks up even the most minute flaws in
recorded music. I am looking for PERFECTLY recorded music. Obviously,
music recorded fairly recently.
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Nick, you HAVE to check out a group called Flim & The BB's. I don't know
what category of music to put them in...jazz or new age jazz but sorta soft
pop/rock. Anyway, the recordings are SUPER clean. I have all their CDs and
absolutely love them. If you check 'em out and decide to get any of them, I
suggest you start with their greatest hits album, Vintage BB's. I can't
guarantee you'll like the music, because everyone's different, but I
guarantee you'll love the sound quality.

I just found this Norwegian band that plays amazing technical metal
with a kind of jazzy twist. Spiral Architect. It sounds incredible
with a nice system. I guess if you crossed Dream theatre with the
genius of Frank Zappa, thats kind of what its like.
Another group I found that sounds really good is Riverside, A British
band. Along the same lines as A Perfect Circle.
As far as Jazz, I dont know alot about, sorry

I cant wait for another round of their music. But they stated it might
be a few years, all are on "special projects". Fates Warning is another
good band with the same musical talent, saw em live once, but have been
plagued with bad producers and poor advertising. Their Awaken the
Guardian and No Exit cd's are the best.

Miles Davis - the "Kind of Blue" album. Amazing.

Some suggestions... Bob James & Earl Klugh playing together as Fourplay,
their initial self-titled album was just fabulous & I routinely check
systems with it. Their bass player Marcus Miller is very talented as
well - I heard them play live at Humphrey's here in SD a number of years
ago and still remember the phenomenal solo he performed walking out
through the audience. Bob James' solo albums also very solid although
unfortunately the earliest ones were analog mastered & I have not found
them quite as enjoyable on CD as I did on LP at the time.
Acoustic Alchemy's hits CD is also very solid, as were several of their
individual albums. If you listen to surround at home, their dts
recording Live on St. Lucia is memorable.
Dave Grusin's recordings are usually very nicely executed, including
those he has produced for others on the GRP label. I'm partial to
Mountain Dance, play it regularly in the car.
Sheffield recordings of Pat Coil are also way up there on the SQ list. I
was very fortunate to hear him perform live at SBN one year in a concert
that a local rep/distributor arranged for the competitors & exhibitors.
He brought a group of mostly Nashville studio musicians with him and the
music was just beautiful. Too bad many of the competitors did not attend
as I am sure it would have been instructive to hear live music performed
that well in a nice small hall setting. I don't like Pat Coil's songs as
much as some others, typically 1 or 2 per CD that really work for me but
the execution is exceptional.

Wow. You're not kidding. I just checked out "The Very Best of Acoustic
Alchemy" on Amazon. Only 60 second samples, but I really liked it!! I'm
going to definitely get that album. Thanks for the heads up, John!

Try looking for a pair of CD's called "The Oxnard Sessions" by Mike Garson.
Very well recorded and not elevator jazz either.

The two guitarists started out playing in London in the subways etc. &
after getting together were "discovered" by KIFM here in SD. Have made a
lot of nice music since then...
Couple of my favorites to listen to in the car are Ariane which is on
that CD, also Fire of the Heart from Back on the Case. If you like the
latter which has a flamenco guitar flavor to it, you'll probably find
some Strunz and Farrah to your liking also although I don't own any of
their CD's so can't vouch for the recording qualities. The music sounded
pretty good on a hi-end FM receiver though.
