My brother and I have started a retail car audio business. He's a
technical guy and he's good at what he does (custom installs, system
design...), I'm a business guy (MBA), and I'm good at what I do. I
know just about nothing of car audio. He's trying to teach me, but he
knows so much that it's difficult for him to come down to my level and
explain things in a way that I can understand. I don't need to be able
to do installs, I don't need to be able to do much, but since this is
the business I'm in, now, then I should be versed in the finer points.

All of that was a long way of asking: what are the best books on the
subject that I can buy? I've purchased the "Car Stereo Cookbook",
which was a piece of crap. I've had a hard time finding anything else
written in the last decade. Any suggestions?

Actually, what's your brother's Email address. I want YOUR job. I am an
MBA, and was a college proffesor at the Univeristy of Portland teaching a
marketing class. I have worked in the marketing department at AT&T for 10
years, and later I worked in marketing at Phoenix Gold, as well. Car Audio
is my LIFE. My ruling passion. I know EVERYTHING about marketing in the
car audio world.

Frankly, he should fire you, and hire me. Would you tell him for me?
THANKS!!!!

Now we have two MasturBaters of America in here. One is ruling his passion
with Jensen and Audiovox gear and the other don't know jack.

The world of car audio, its like its all underground. Atleast in my
neighborhood. Only the freaks come out at night and wanna do something
crazy like tear their car apart and install a kick ass system. Most
everyone I know refuses to pay an arm and a leg for a shaggy sounding
"professional" setup.
If I were you, I'd forget about the technical jargon because unless you
have an electronics background, you'll just never get it and focus more
on getting the kids to spend all their money on pimpin their ride
instead of Doritos and Twinkies. Get yourself a sweet lookin vehicle
and hook that bitch up, show em what youre made of. Paint your name
all over it, cruise the streets at night, hang out at clubs etc...
Thats worth more money than any book.

if you want to learn about car audio a good place to start is www.bcae1.com
that website has more to offer than most books. It will start each section
with the 'army' version (I say that because I am Air Force), and then it
will move on into the technical stuff if you're interested in reading it.
You know, I give you more credit than 90% of the car audio places that I
have been to. This is because not only do you admit you know nothing, you
asked for help too. Most places know nothing and try to act like they do,
and then tell you that you're wrong when you question them on something that
you already know the answer to and you call them out. Good on you for
coming and asking for help!

Yeah, I don't think that will be happening. Thanks for the offer.

Thanks for the advise. I won't do much selling in the first place, but
when I do talk about these things, I don't want to sound like a guy who
works for Best Buy.

That's the same thing my brother has said. I'm looking for a car now,
and intend to do just that. In a past life, I was a mechanic (ASE
Master Certified), so I'm comfortable with a lot of the technical
aspects of car electronics (wiring, charging systems...), but some of
the topics are just beyond me (imaging, box design...), so those are
the things that I want to study on, and those are what I'll be working
on in whatever car I put together. The other bitch will be in putting
together a "Tuner" car, I've got love for 600 HP Chevys, I've never
been in to the fast and furious mobiles. But, I'm learning. Thanks
for taking the time to answer my question.

Glad we could help, and that bcae1.com site, that is a great reference

Go find you a late 99 model jetta (MKIV version) and buy it for not too
much. Screw the fast and the furious crap. Get you a nice german made car
that's not too expensive and still runs great and looks great. You can deck
a system out in those. (I am partial cuz I have a 2000 jetta VR6)
