March 17th 06, 06:14 PM
Hello all, I'm in the market for a powered subwoofer for both home
theater
and 2.1 audio purposes. I have about $500.00 to spend. and I just about

narrowed it down to either the Aperion audio S-10 the Velodyne DPS-10.,
NHT
Classic 10. I want a audiophile quality sub and I need your thoughts
and
opinions on what is the best sub that $500.00 can buy. I'm leaning
towards
the Aperion audio Itimus S-10 at $499.00 with no tax and free shipping
direct from Aperion audio because of the good reviews that it has
received
and the excellent customer service that I'm told Aperion audio gives
it's
customers it also have a 30 day free trial period and if you don't like
it
they will give you your money back and even pay for shipping of the sub
back
to them. I called them today and they are back ordered on the S-10 to
April
even though they will be getting some from the factory next weed they
are
all sold so they're products seem to be in high demand. I listen to
just
about everything Jazz, R&B, Motown.Top 40, though I listen to allot
classical music mostly Mozart and other baroque music, Handel, etc. So
give
me your thoughts on what to buy.

Thanks

You shuld also consider one of the PSB line.

The best subwoofers IMO are the DIY kind. There are plenty of subs that can
be built from kits designed by people like Adire Audio and others, that will
get you 25 Hz response for under 500.00

Adire makes a 12" woofer, the Shiva, that in the right box or cylinder will
get you down to 22 Hz and with room loading to 18Hz.
Add in an amp like the A500 from Behringer bridged to mono and youj have
plenty of power as well as deep, clean bass that would cost much more if it
were purchased with a brand name on it.

The least expensive way to do it is also the best in terms of resonance.
That is to use a cylinder such as Sonotube. You can search the web for
sonotube subwoofers and find several projects and at least one that is step
by step. When finished you will have something that, because it is a
cylinder, will not have the cabinet resonances that a box would have, that
require extensive bracing to control.

Before you spend any money on a finished sub, check out what is possible
with DIY. If you still wish to go with a finished sub, my preference would
be for the Velodyne. In any case I would not consider any sub that can't be
crossed over with a 24 dB/oct slope, either through the reciever or othe
home theatre preamp, or with the subs own xover.
