Glad to see he's found a place to contribute and not be bothered by the

JJ seems to be a traveling lost soul, skipping from conference to
conference.

It's a shame. He is not only a genuine expert, he has a genuine passion for
the hobby and could deal with its realities and practicalities. He was the
one who "warned" me that the converters in the Panasonic 3700 DAT's were not
the best (he was right)" and when he left AT&T he was working on and very
excited about new surround sound technology.

Yes Harry you diefy JJ. but you avoid every opportunity to deal with the
realities and practicalities of audio.

Yes Harry, and he warned you about the grotesque problems related to sighed
evaluations and well, so much for that!

J.J. was able to discuss a lot of things, Arny, and its for that reason I
and others enjoyed very much his presence on the newsgroup, even as we
sometimes disagreed over issues.

Think about it.

That's a wonderful thing for you to say, Harry. Basically, he let you stew
in your weirdness while pumping more hot air into your inflated ego.

I have and I have too much hope for humanity to be that cynical.

That's the interesting thing Harry, while I've learned lots of neat stuff in
the past 9 years on Usenet, I can't think of one fundamental thing that I've
seen you learn.

The time I spent with JJ recording in Minnesota in 2001 -- me in
stereo,
him in surround -- were exhilarating. It's a shame that JJ had to leave
the surround masters at AT&T when he moved to Microsoft, where they
are presumably still languishing in a cupboard.

Is that the same JJ? Jim Johnston? If so, what's he doing in Redmond WA.
Didn't he work for Bell Labs?

IIRC in one post he says he's retired, or semi-retired.
I don't think he's lost, he's just doing what he wants, and soing it
his way.

He's obviously still dispensing audio expertise, just not anyplace
where he's going to be abused like he was on usenet by the usual
suspects.

Well, if he was posting in open forums, that I would understand. He was not
abused on RAHE, although he was sometimes challenged in argument. I think
he just got tired of having to explain things again and again to new people.
But largely I think he quit for awhile because of a major shift in his life
that demanded his attention elsewhere. And he has simply chosen other, more
web-centric, places to reemerge (usenet hardly has the monopoly on forums
that it, along with CompuServe, had in the pre-web days.

JJ pretty much had his act together. Challenging him was mostly for the
foolhardy. However, he was not without his unusual shadings of meanings and
occasional controversial (as in capable of being rebutted effectively)
comments.

I know that JJ got tired of the ongoing harrasment and childish
name-calling by Middius and his clique over here.

I think that he was shaken up by being forced out of the AT&T labs.

But HTML-based forums are so awkward and slow, compared to Usenet.

It's a shame that Arnold was a substantial contributor to driving him

I think he chose one of the most reasonable and rational forums on the web.
The JREF is already well known and despised by audiophiles for wanting some
of the idiot reviewers of magic cables, and magic rocks, etc., to submit to
an ABX test of same. So far none of them have the balls to try and collect
the 1 million doallr prize.

Since the JREF is all about debunking nonsense, and so is JJ, it makes the
most sense for him to be a participant there.
