View Full Version : Combining two mono into stereo and synchronizing

Can some one tell me how, with 'lame' or 'sox' or 'audacity'
or any other freeware (yes, I'm cheap) on Mac OS X 10.3.9
or FreeBSD 5.4 or 4.9 to
1. Take two mono files and make each of them one side
of a stereo file.
2. Make pauses longer or shorter in ONE track at a time
to synchronize them.
Format doesn't matter. They are now MP3 and the finished
file will be CDDA but conversions are no problem for me.
I tried the time-shift tool in audacity but it insists
on moving both tracks together when I use it on a stereo
file.

I believe in Audacity, you can split the stereo file into two separate mono
tracks. Once you do this, you can time shift one or the other. I believe
that you can then specify that one track is left and the other right, so
that when you save as WAV (or MP3), the tracks are mixed as one stereo
track.

I'd think so, but I sure couldn't identify the command by
reding the menus. I already have them in mono, so the
first step is handled. I'll look through the menus again,
maybe I just blinked at the wrong time.

In any formula, constants (especially those obtained
from handbooks) are to be treated as variables.

Should be in the pull down menu that's attached to the track. Here's a
picture in a tutorial showing the menu:
http://www.daniel.uklinux.net/tutorial/part_five.html
As you can see, you can split a stero track (into two mono tracks), or mark
a mono track as mono, left channel, or right channel. In addition, it looks
like there is a "Make Stereo Track" menu pick, but I can't remember how to
make that one work. Perhaps it's later in the tutorial?
This particular tutorial starts here:

I'm sure there are other Audacity tutorials out there if you search for them
(I use Google).

Yep, it's all there. I was searching the main menu bar up top.
