View Full Version : Can subwoofers damage 6 1/2" in back deck?

I have a set of Fosgate 12" subs in my trunk. Will the air pressure screw up
the new 6.5" Alpine Type R's I put in the rear deck. The guy at the stereo
store suggested I buy a plastic "bucket" to put the 6.5's in.
Or is he talking crap?

It could speed wear at very high volumes. The sub air pressure and
woofer motion will be in phase for certain frequencies. Together it
will increase the mechanical strain on the suspension.
Buckets aren't the only solution. You could customize the rear panels
so the trunk vents more freely into the cabin. It will probably sound
better that way too.
Be sure to use a HP filter if you go with the buckets. Low frequency
power will just go to heat.

I don't buy that at all, I think he's just trying to sell you some
bull**** you dont need.... There might be some legit reasons to want
to put your rear speakers in 'buckets' but I HIGHLY doubt fear of subs
damaging them is one of em.

I suggest a test... Disconnect the 6.5's and crank up the 12's. If you
see the 6.5's still jumping when the bass hits, that means air pressure
from the 12's is pushing them out. If you don't see much movement,
you're probably okay.
It really depends on how tight the air space is in your trunk.

I would use the plastic buckets on the 6.5s
it will keep the woofers from pushing through the
6.5s which could cause the 6.5s cones to move
in an unwanted fashion....

You are fine. Dont worry about it unless your speakers all of a sudden
dont play as loud before distortion. the subs may affect the alpines
excursion but not too much. Although it would be best for sound quality
to make a enclosure or bucket for each speaker but if your using REAR
speakers then you must not care about sound quality much anyways. The
definition of stereo is 2 channel. Not 4. 4 speakers is for surround
sound movies and if your speakers are so crappy that 1 pair doesnt get
loud enough. You said alpine type R's right? Amp them and high pass
them and they will be plenty loud.
