View Full Version : Home Audio Help
December 13th 05, 08:05 PM
Hey there everybody. I was wondering if I could get some advice. I am
getting married next August, and we have been looking into DJ's and
found that we are really going to be spending approximately $800 of
money on which we won't really get much return. Our idea was to look
into a good home audio system (preferably wireless) which we could also
use as an audio set up for the reception. Any ideas on something that
would be within that price range that would be good quality?
Thanks all.

Good DJ's aren't there for their equipment or to play background
music. Any idiot could do that for a few hundred bucks. They're
there to find a way to get the party jumpin. A good DJ will take a
lethargic... we just ate wedding cake crowd... and get some life into
'em..... Let's get this party started.
You don't expect to be around all evening providing entertainment...
do you?

My advice: Hire a band.

We have a friend who will operate the sound equipment for us. We are
looking to use the money as more of an investement in something that we
will continue to use.

The room looks to be no larger than 50 by 50 feet, but I may be
slightly off. We are trying to plan the wedding from across the
country. :) Thanks

I don't think there are many people who are knowledgeable about audio that
would find any wireless audio system worthy of mention, since AFAIK all
wireless speakers are not very good.
Another potential drawback is the fact that wireless systems have to, by
law, be capable of receiveing interference from other radio sources. IOW,
you might be dancing to YOUR song when the music is overwhelmed by the sound
of a police or medical emergency call coming through your speakers. I would
find that a bit disturbing.

A possible solution would be to purchase a CD player with a volume control
connect it to a pair of Behringer A500 amplifiers running in bridged mono
mode, that would supply 500 wpc and can be purchased on line from the
following location: http://www.zzounds.com/item--BEHA500 for $179.95 each.
Or use one single high power amp such as:
http://www.zzounds.com/item--BEHEP1500, although the fan from this amp is
rather noisy so it would not be my choice for use in a home audio system
unless you could put it someplace where the fan would not be heard. Next
buy or rent some speakers from a pro sound supplier, use regular wired
connections, no wireless stuff. I recomend you rent the speakers if you
want to stay under budget, however possible candidates for purchase might be
something like: http://www.zzounds.com/item--BEHB1520 or:
http://www.zzounds.com/item--GMNGT1202.
Probably your best bet would be to rent the speakers since you'll be able to
find speakers that are very efficient and will play very loud, but not
neccessarily good for indoor use in a home.
The A500 amp is easily one of the better buys for any amplifer need, home or
PA, no fan, lots of power and very inexpensive. A very good starting point
for building a system.
While you may not have much to show for hireing a DJ you will have the
probability of getting someone who can keep a party moving and knows what to
play, when and has all the equipment on hand.
My suggestions would be for allowing you or someone to run sound on their
own and give you something of value for use in your future audio system.
Whatever you choose, good luck and best wishes for a long and happy
marriage.

Thanks a lot for the information. I do completely appreciate what DJ's
do, I don't want it to sound that way, but we are just working on the
budget of a grad student and a teacher. :)
We are still looking at all of our options. :)

I tried to give some reasonable options because I do understand budget
limitations, been there, done that. :-)
