I appreciate it very much if you could help me on this problem to
setup a home theater system; please be patient to read to the bottom:

I have the following components: (i) Onkyo TXSR 601 receiver (ii) Bose
AM10 speaker set with subwoofer (iii) Sony DVD+VCR combo player (iv)
Sony Wega TV and (v) Basic cable service (no digital box, only a
coaxial input).

1. I have connected the bose speaker system, through the subwoofer to
the speaker+subwoofer connections of the Onkyo system;
2. I have connected the VCR+DVD combo to DVD in of the receiver
through digital optical audio wire and a svideo connection.
3. There is no cable coaxial input to the Onkyo receiver to receive
the TV, it expects a digital box since the possible connections from
cable to the receiver are only through the svideo or component video
cables
4. I have connected the receiver monitor out to TV video1-in through
a s-video connecting wire (I need to have this connection because the
onscreen display from the receiver should show up on the TV)

Given this situation, what is the right/best way to route the basic
cable TV? Here are the options (only that I know) to do this:
1. Connect the cable coax to VCR+DVD combo coax in, and connect video
coax out to the TV coax in:: with this though, I am just not able to
get the cable signal on the TV. How is the cable signal routed to the
TV in this case? through the coax or through the connection 2 above?
2. I cannot setup the VCR+DVD system because no video from this shows
up on the TV.

What am I doing wrong? What is the right/appropriate/best way to
connect these components? I really appreciate your help and answer.
Thanks,

OP

It sure sounds like you haven't read the manuals for your components.
Your problem could be with the vcr+dvd unit, your reciever, or your
TV. You should start by plugging your vcr unit straight into your TV
to see if it works. If it does, then you know the problem is with
your reciever. If it doesn't, then you have a problem with your
TV's s-video input or your vcr unit. If you have another s-video
component that you know works, plug that into your TV's s-video jack.
If it works, then you know the problem is with your vcr.
