View Full Version : Bad volume control on 99 Civic CD

This car's stock audio has the type of volume control that just keeps
turning forever, with no start and stop points. Sometimes, when you
turn it clockwise to increase the volume, the volume actually goes
down, or least stays the same! Apparently it's not the usual pot.
Can I fix it? What part am I looking for?
Thanks.

is it nice enough to fix instead of just getting a new head unit?
Personally i'd just change to something nicer. if you like the HU that much
find one at a junk yard, usually they'll have a place where they keep all
the stock head units, shouldn't be too much of a problem

Good idea, Chris. It's my 22 year old daugher's car, and she can't
afford a new unit right now. I thought if I could fix it with a $10
part and a few hours work, it would be a good solution.

There is no easy fix for that as far as I know.
those type of volume controls use a light, similar to cd tracking,
to adjust volume. Sometimes turning up slowly will work,
But in the long run it will best to just replace the unit. Most of the
larger
retail chains offer free install with units $100 and up

You might also check out the local car audio shops. Most of the ones
I've been in have bins/shelves full of factory stereos that they've
replaced with aftermarket units. Personally, I've always held onto
uninstalled stock head units, either to have them as a spare or to
re-install when I sell the car, but I guess a lot of people just let
the shop keep the old stereo.
