Right-wing French MP Philippe de Villiers told RTL radio that the
problem stemmed from the "failure of a policy of massive and
uncontrolled immigration".

While the Muslim representative demands they be "given" their due.

Dalil Boubakeur, the head of the Paris mosque and the president of the
French Council for the Muslim Religion, said living conditions for
Muslim immigrants in the suburbs were unacceptable.

They "must be given the conditions to live with dignity as human
beings", not in "disgraceful squats", he said.

They demand France give them what they could never earn or build for
themselves.

From what I've seen on TV, the conditions most of them live in *are*
unacceptable to Western standards.
If they are French citizens, they have as much right to ask for
adequate accomodation as other French citizens.

IMHO.

Most of Paris' suburbs is a bull**** inhuman urbanization from the '60s.
Add to this 40 to 45% unenployment and you have an explosive mixture.

Same events occured in London few years ago... same reasons.

They might have a high unemployment rate, but they have a kinder and gentler
"French" style economy (certainty NOT American style capitalism) with a
great social safety net.

They aren't french citizens. My accomodations are strictly
dependent on what I can and am willing to pay, not what the state is
willing to provide me. And I don't go burn someones car when I don't
like it.

Despite what ScottW says, then they're French, right? At least if they
DECIDE themselves that they're French and have lived there for the
requisite number of years.

I find it funny that ScottW thinks that this is the end of France, but
doesn't see it as the end of the US when the same thing happens here
(as he's already admitted).

Well, when they're allowed to stay in France, they (should) have at
least the same rights as others.
If one doesn't want (to take responsibility for) illegal aliens, get
them out.
Allow them to stay, and you owe them at least a decent shelter.

Look at it this way: here in Holland, we (the state) provide housing
and a minimum of income for those who are allowed to stay here.
With that basis, they can learn the language, and when they are
acomodated, they can go working.

Most of them do after some time, we have very knowledgeable and
skilled doctors, engineers etc. from Turkey, Croatia, some African and
Asian countries.

I agree that burning cars and other stuff isn't the way to reach your
goal, however.

The same tricks of bureacracy can happen here as well. At least there

I guess that it's like in France.
The have an amount of money at their disposal and they need to pay their
accomodation, etc...

Not the same *declared* fight.

On a NG so full of stupid hatemongers even "funny" amalguams should be
prohibited.

If you had delved a little deeper from the same source, you would have
read THIS:

"It was rumoured that the boys had actually been chased by police, a
belief which quickly spread and sparked rioting in Clichy-sous-Bois, a
poor suburb largely populated by North African immigrants and their
French-born descendants where there was already friction between
residents and police"

I know that comprehension isn't your best trait, so please let me know
if you'd like the phrase "French-born descendants" explained to you.

Our history of free housing projects is not pretty. There is no
pride of ownership and the concentration of the low end of the economic
structure and the associated crime is just a bad idea.

Heres a good history.

Don't try to look intelligent now... You were speaking about Theo van
Gogh murder.
And I don't miss any point since your remark was pointless. ;-)

There's no relation between the 2 events... Even if it was a good

"France has been stunned by the rioting in immigrant-dominated areas."

"The 18-25-year-olds include immigrants, students and the unemployed. "

"The areas affected are poor, largely immigrant communities with high
levels of unemployment."

Boy, are YOU stupid.

I'm sorry that you miss the point of "foreigners" committing mayhem in
order to promote their viewpoint/culture/status or to "right wrongs".

Sure there is. Both events revolved around exotic cultures living in a
country apart from their heritage and both were trying to support
their "cause". Sorry that you're on ScottW's level when it comes to
something other than one-dimensional thinking.

This is because your social *relation* is based on *ENVY*.
This is the only one word who link as differents character as Middius,
Geosting, S888Wheel, Sackman, YOU....

Decent accomodation is the first step for integration.
When 2 idiots are burning cars 10 are studying to get a decent job.
Unfortunatly for them they are a little bit less interesting for medias.

Oh, I forget you are only interested in sensational news... This

French Islamists apparently intend to perpetrate attacks on civilian
aircraft in France and have to this end acquired two ground-to-air
missiles in Chechnya. This is just the latest development in judge
Jean-Louis Bruguiere's judicial inquiry into the Chechen networks,

They were emigrating for a better life.
Either they found it, or they didn't.
If they found it, they should be happy.
if they didn't, they made a mistake.
As a compassionate conservative, I
think the government should offer them

to help them rectify their mistake.

Uh oh, someone's "vexed". If you want to annoy Mr. California right
back, all you have to do is write a single word: Watts.

Did you know Watts property values appreciated 40% last year?

I'm not vexed, sincerely not. BTW why should I be ?
Other times, other mores... Perhaps 25 years before I would have been
with them for the same kind of bad reasons.

In fact I was just proposing to Scott to make a point before his excess
of childish xenophobic enthusiasm makes him look much more stupid than
he really is.

Recent events have shown that nobody is really protected against such
uncontrolled and generalized access of violence.
So if Scott has already forgotten New Orleans I sincerely doubt that he
can recall LA 1992 spring... :-(

It only shows that all the appeasement you can muster won't save you.

and you can't recognize that the economic success of the US over the past
decade has done much to prevent another Watts.
Obviously French culture & economy has failed its new minority.

If they wanted to stab a film director in Europe,
they should have "at least" selected one who is a child molester.

So, it WASN'T the "last battle for the US" when Watts went up in
flames.

Cool. I'm guessing it will be the same for France.

BTW, how many people have been killed in France during these current
riots?

No. I comparing the almost 30 people killed in the week-long Watts
riots to the current riots. Since ScottW seemed to think that this is
Armaggeddon for the French, I was just comparing the two situations...

I don't lay it to a failure of France
(for all of its problems). People are responsible
for their own bad behavior. I won't use the cop out of blaming society,
for rioting, whether it is here, or France.

So what about the riot, pillage, rapes in New Orleans recently.
All this *misery* usually carefully hidden which was suddenly exposed to
the world.
It's the first time I saw that. Even in the poorest countries usually
after a natural disaster solidarity is the first natural reaction. Not
in USA : rather than to send help your gourvernment has been obliged to
send the army. The most powerful democratic country of the world !!!!

If it's the only evidence of your economical and social success I prefer
my petty French problems and take care of our adolescent arsonists. :-(

That was bad reporting. The looting was real, but we found out
later that the rapes and murders didn't happen. There was not rioots
reported or
otherwise. Do not mistake looting for rioting; we know you'might have some
language barriers in this regard.

Why not compare our revolutionary war to theirs Dave?
I'm sure you can find relevance in irrelevance.

It isn't Armaggeddon for the French, just their country.

I know you struggle to comfort yourself in the knowledge that you aren't

Hurricanes have no motives.

However, you have a city that's by all meaures pretty poor having
major parts of its environs uninhabitable and thrown into chaos due to
economic inadaquacies. But you think it's "their fault" for being
poor.

There was no such thing as yuppies during the time of Kent State. In
fact, by definition, college students have never really been yuppies.

Only you would find those riots "meandering" and "aimless". sitting in
your picket fence perch, it's understandable, I guess.

Poor Lionel has been reduced to two words.

Meanwhile the French version of the Watts riot has spread across the

If it's entirely within my control, yes. If I'm third generation poor,
then less so. Sure, some extraordinary individuals manage to rise out
of the morass, but not everyone is extraordinary, and luck and
providence is sometimes involved as well.

> Would you be making this extremely convoluted argument if there
>hadn't been a hurricane?

I make comments like that regarding the state of our society
regardless of the hurricane, yes. I've said as much in this forum, I
think. The subject was health insurance, that I think is something
that is one of the basic "safety net" features that the government
should ensure, and that many other enlightened societies offer.

The class problem is pretty clear to anyone who looks at the New
Orleans situation with an unjaundaced eye. About 80% of the population
was able to get out. That 80% was predominately middle-class (even
lower middle class) and above who actually had a car available. Most
of those left behind were those who *didn't* have cars, or the
"luxury" to evacuate because they weren't sure if they could afford to
take time off of work during a "crap shoot" evacuation. While you can
take the bus or walk to get to work, you couldn't necessarily take a
bus or walk to evacuation.

You are SO out of touch in your little suburbian utopia, that you
really don't have a clue. Perhaps the problems of the poor will never
touch you, but you better hope that it remains that way. Hopefully,
the only thing you will have to worry about is how much of your
"pocket change" it takes to fill up the tank of your SUV, or the price
of lobster and charcoal/butane. Hopefully you won't HAVE to look back
on your referenced French revolution. You'd better hope that the
tipping point is far away, although the events of the past few months
shows that a well-timed "natural disaster", as you so coyly put it,
can move the tipping point that much closer. Remember, you live near a
fault line. What happens when Compton is ripped by a major earthquake
and the government is slow to react?

No, I'm not calling for revolution, just some self-interest-driven
compassion and common sense, as well as a commitment from the
government to offer help to those most disenfranchised and
disadvantaged. I just happen to think that it's part of the
government's "birthright" to protect its mother, i.e. the people.

I know that you disagree.

They had to decide whether they could afford to take time
off work, to save their lives? Also, if its that bad that there is a
mandatory evacuation, it is most assured that the would be no
jobs to come back to. Their employers and the employers customers would be
gone, also.

Yeah, poor people were stuck because they couldn't afford cars. Let's
dive full balst into Socialism, and have the government provide them with
cars and gasoline, in addition to subsidized rent, food stamps, welfare,
and medicaid. What they really need is opportunity, something they are
deprived of
because of lousy schoold run by an ultra liberal educational establishment,
drugs, and bad or absent parenting. Despite that, a few sturdy souls do
make it, while most don't. But, it can be done.

Bleeding heart compassion and empathy will do nothing to
alleviate poverty. Opportunity, and the will of those who are
disadvantaged to grasp those opportunities, will rescue those
who have a clue. The addicts, dope dealers, criminals, and
those buried in the morass of despondency are doomed to remain, no matter
waht the rest of society tries to do
for them.

By opportunity, I mean school vouchers, economic development,
home ownership programs, subsidized higher education, and help for
samll start up businesses.

Too often, liberal compassion and common sense are mutually exclusive.
Help is opportunity. Government assistance towards maintaining the staus quo
is the work of the devil.

I don't disagree that we make government to protect us.
All of us. I also don't disagree that government did a
bad job in New Orleans. But that was the local gov
and the fault of New Orleans and La more than anyone
else. Your class argument just fails. People who don't accept
a certain amount of responsibility are going to suffer when disaster
strikes. Look at Florida and all the people who were warned
to have 3 days of supplies and they're lining up for relief on day
1 after the hurricane. Should the gov be responsible for the
welfare of people who do nothing to prepare themselves?
