If you are thinking of hooking an iPod up to either, the Alpine is the
better choice (though no head unit controlled iPod solution is yet truly
useful). Otherwise, it's probably something of a toss up.

Coincidentally I had the same dilemma (well, almost the same, the Alpine
8953 vs. Pioneer P8600).
First, let's be honest, the Pioneer has a cooler display (it's color!).
Hands down. Case closed. So if the display is the most important thing to
you, I guess the Pioneer is best.
But I went with the Alpine for several reasons. First, I have used Alpine
heads for years and have been very happy with the quality of construction
and the sound quality. Over the years I have compared Alpine sound to other
heads (Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony) and have always found the Alpine superior.
But what did it for me was the fact that the 9853 (and 9855) has Bass Engine
Pro, which includes a five band parametric EQ and time correction. My car
has very specific frequency issues and the outboard 13 band EQ I have used
for years just couldn't zero-in on the problem. But the Alpine can give you
33 frequency bands (1/3 octave from 20Hz to 20kHz) to choose from (as well
as 5 levels of Q). The Pioneer, only 13 frequency bands TOTAL. This was a
HUGE deal for me.
