View Full Version : My system is pathetic

During the summer months, a few of my friends and myself drive
out to the middle of nowhere where we have sound offs. It's a
good place to do this because there's not a neighbor for like
9 or 10 miles. Anyway, it seems that it never fails; my system
appears to be too weak. We compete to see how loud and how far
away our systems can be heard, and mine is pathetic. I just
don't get it. I have a great deal of power and everything.
I'll list my gear...
Headunit : Panasonic
Front speakers: Diamond Audio s600s 6-1/2" component set
installed in the front doors.
Subs: Two 10" Diamond Audio subs in a sealed box.
Amps:
--Front: Diamond Audio 2-channel amp rated @ 150 x 2 RMS @ 4-
ohms
--Subs: Diamond Audio mono-block rated at 1200 x 1 RMS @ 1-
ohm
This is my complete setup. That's a beastly 1500 watts of true
RMS power, and it sounds so weak... The volume on the headunit
can go up to 40 (though 35 seems to be the limit without
noticable distortion) and it can barely be heard from outside
of the vehicle. I obviously must be doing something wrong. But
what?? How much power does one actually need to be win a sound
off?

IMO Not enough displacement and/or installation.

You amplifier power is fine. Although your 2x10" subs are small, I
have heard plenty of 2x10" get real loud. In excess of 145 dbs.
I suspect its your enclosure. Hopefully you're not using one of those
BB one size fits all subwoofer boxes.
Ported enclosures always get louder, but aren't as detailed.
If its really important for you to get loud, try upgrading your subs to
a larger size and at a minimum look into having a ported enclosure
being either fabbed up by you or someone else for your specific sub.

Paul,
What kind of vehicle is this in, how is the sub box installed, and how are
your subs wired? Also, check to make sure the gains on your amp(s) are
properly adjusted. I can't comment on whether or not you'd win a
competition with your friends, but you should be getting plenty of volume to
say the least.
