Does the Kenwood KCA-iP500 or the Alpine KCA-420i allow for music
control via the iPod (when the iPod is connected to the car stereo
control interface)?

If you mean control the Deck through the iPod, No. They are only
designed to control the iPod from the Deck.

Not sure what you're asking, but if you're asking whether or not you
can still select songs on the iPod while it's connected to the deck,
then the answer is no, at least for the Alpine adapter. As soon as
you connect the iPod to the Alpine deck, the Alpine logo appears on
the iPod's face, and the iPod controls are locked out. While the iPod
is connected, you have to make all of your song/album/playlist
selections using the head unit's controls.

Wow that's kinda irritating I bought a third party hookup because I am
using my factory head unit, and it lets me control the ipod using both
the head unit and the ipod, mind you have I limit Ipod control from the
head unit, just forward and backward 1 song. If I want to change play
lists or anything like that I have to use the ipod.

We have an Alpine/iPod setup in our rig--works great. My only complaint is
that navigating the iPod from the Alpine deck using the control knob is
SLOW. Wish each selection was one click. Instead there's an annoying pause
between each song. It doesn't matter how fast you turn. We have a 6gb mini
connected and it's a real drag when trying to find a particular song or
artist. I can't imagine using a 20gb.

yep, i know the feeling. i've got a 60gb full, with lots of
comilations, so scrolling by artist or title is a big no-no. only
sensible way is to put it on random or use a playlist. real pain in the
arse when i want to find a specific artist. i relly wish there was a
quicker way to scroll, maybe an a-z feature? alpine must have done
their testing with an ipod mini only 10% full.....
2 other gripes:-
1 when the ipod is totally flat out of battery, connecting it to the
head unit does nothing, i need to get back home to charge it.
2 i cant set my head unit to display artist and title at the same
time!!!
i love listening to my ipod in the car. but these 3 gripes make me
think that alpine got the tea boy to design this product!!

BTW if anyone has found workaround for any of my gripes, please post
here.
Thanks
