I own a 1992 Saturn SL2. My factory speakers aren't working for me and I plan
on buying newer speakers that'll pump some good bass.

Any suggestions?

I am willing to spend up to $300 for a new set of speakers...front and back.

Hey Andrew,

Asking a question like that will most likely result in a handful of people
all suggesting different brands based on their preference...which won't get
you any closer to helping you decide. Similar if I asked everyone what kind
of 4-door car I should buy for under $25K.

Ultimately you should go to some retail stores and do some listening tests
and buy what sounds good to you within your budget. If you want to shop
online start with the likes of crutchfield, cardomain, or thezeb (all three
are very reputable .com stores).

Probably not the answer you were looking for, but that's my advice
nonetheless.

Tony

Andrew, I found out the hard way. That's the wrong question to ask
here. I asked that too once, I got the same response you just got. Tony
is right, everyone's taste is different. After I asked and got the same
answer you did, I just went and listened to every speaker known to man.
Then I bought what I liked the sound of. So, like the asshole that I
am, I came back to the newsgroup to announce what I got.

here's the punch line....

The same people who told me to go listen to speakers and buy what I
liked then told me what ****ty speaker I bought.

.....go figure

The right question might be:

I own a 1992 Saturn SL2. My factory speakers aren't working for me and
I plan
on buying newer speakers that'll pump some good bass.

Any suggestions ON WHAT SPEAKERS TO AVOID?

I think you ought to be more discriminating about who you listen to then.

Crappy ones.

$300 for two pairs of speakers gives you a lot of choices, but if
you're primarily after more bass, your money might be better spent
elsewhere. You didn't say if you're using the factory head unit, but
if you are, it's not putting out a whole lot of power. That, combined
with the fact that 6-1/2" speakers are about the biggest you'll be
able to fit in your rear deck, means that even with new speakers, you
might not get what you're looking for.

For $300, I'd suggest adding a powered subwoofer. There are plenty of
models available for that price or lower. When you add the subwoofer,
add some "bass blockers" to your four factory speakers ($20 or less to
do all four) so that they won't have to reproduce the low notes that
the subwoofer will be taking care of.

I think once you've added a powered sub and freed up the rest of the
speakers for the higher notes, you'll be happier with the result than
if you just replaced the four factory speakers with aftermarket ones.
If you don't spend the whole $300 on the sub and crossovers, you can
always take what's left over and put it towards some new interior
speakers in the future.

For whatever it's worth, you can get $40 off of a Crutchfield order
assuming you're a first time customer. Enter referral code
pgt1d-auv4u-uw1kd (there's a referral code box you'll see when you
place your order), and discount code PA166 in the "special comments"
space. At first you may only see the initial $20 referral discount, but
rest assured the confirmation email will reflect the full $40. Good
luck with your speaker hunt!

I hadn't heard of the second and third. Good to know. Thanks.

No. The original advice was good. The problem is not with John. It's
with those people who had things to say later when it was too late.

Even if their second opinions were correct -- and at least they must
have thought so, or they are just contrarians and fibbers -- having
failed to warn him when it could have done him some good, they should
have kept their mouths shut later. And the speakers sounded good to
him, so they were contradicting themselves also.
