View Full Version : best budget speakers with bass?

Hi, I'm shopping around for speakers, and I hope I could get some
advice from this board. I'm trying to spend less than $250 for a pair
of bookshelf speakers in my bedroom. I listened (as well as I could,
considering the circumstances) to a pair of Athena AS-B1's at Best
Buy--they sounded fantastic, but the bass was really not low enough
for me. I'd be willing to sacrifice a little clarity for a speaker
with a wider range--I'd be grateful to hear what anyone might be able
to suggest.

Thanks!
Jason

*Caution* : too much bass in a bedroom can cause shivering and weak
erections.

My recommendation is to find an old pair of JBL L or 4400 series
monitors.

Take the "b", off the "bass", and it will work quite well in the bedroom.

Bass requires a large speaker. You are not going to get a lot of bass
from a bookshelf speaker. What you can do is buy the bookshelf speakers
that sound good to you. Then save up some money until you can afford to
get a decent sub-woofer to add to your system.

Good point! I wish he'd put some AIR in his tires, though!

No it doesn't. It requires a speaker that can create low frequencies.

Agreed with a caveat. Within reasonably broad limits, bass extension, high
output, low distortion, high efficiency, and box size can be traded-off
against each other. In extreme cases, large size is still required to get
clean high output at the lowest frequencies.
