If you've been collecting them over the last ten years, why do you
still call them "new" amps? Do you buy them and never install them,
or what?

Yeah, that's a good one there, Bob. Teach us oh audio guru... share
your audio knowledge with us... show us the path to car audio nirvana!
[/heavy sarcasm]
If you're going to collect car audio equipment, you may as well put it
to use. Buy a 50 amp DC power supply and hook up a working system in
your shop or garage... there's no point in bragging about your
collection if it's just collecting dust... hook that crap up!

You can get the Clarion EQS744 on eBay for $60-65 shipped, from at
least a half-dozen different vendors, so I wouldn't have paid $85 for
the first one, much less for a second one.
As for Precision Audio, I've never used them, but if you look at the
posts in this newsgroup over the years, most peoples' experience and
impressions with them have been pretty poor. I know that some of
their subwoofers are "lookalikes" of some of the JL Audio models, and
the packaging even uses the same font as JL. They also use model
names like "JW-10" and "JW-12", which might confuse an unwary buyer.
Swiss Audio and Audiobahn are/were divisions of the same company.
That's not the same as saying that Swiss is made by Audiobahn -
they're both just owned by the same people, along with Alphasonik and
Digital Audio. Those four companies don't manufacture anything at all
- they give their specs to overseas companies for them to produce and
put the Audiobahn/Alphasonik/Digital/Swiss logo on them.
As a result, the products are somewhat generic, although the quality
is pretty fair.

Wow Bob, you are falling deeper and deeper into the sewers of the car
audio world... Soundstorm? Are you serious? That's just one of those
cheezy companies that came out to trick the ignorant into thinking they
were buying Soundstream... kind of like Rockwood/Rockford.
$85 will go a long way toward some decent gear... or better yet, into
some educational reading material to help you make better buying
decisions, and to increase your knowledge of audio in general.
But, then I have to remember, nobody can be this stupid... can they? I
guess the other guys are probablly right... bob wald = troll...

Whether they've any good or not, why on earth do you want TWO of them?
Is the second one going into another car, or are you going to keep it
as a spare? The same unit that goes for $55 today will either be $40
next year, or it will have been replaced by another model with more
features that you can get for the same $55 that this one is costing
you.
(Or do you have some "inside information" that tells you that
equalizers are about to get really expensive?)
Honestly, it looks like a pretty nice piece for $55. Clarion is a
reputable company, and I know a lot of people that would be willing to
spend $55 just to get the aux-input feature. The crossover frequency
isn't continously-variable, but at least the choices they give you are
60Hz and 90Hz, instead of the typical 90/120/150 Hz. I like to keep
my subs crossed over pretty low, so 60 Hz is pretty close to what I
would use anyway.
I don't think that you'll be able to "gap" the crossovers, though. If
you use 60 Hz as the low-pass crossover point for your subs, then the
high-pass point for your main speakers will be 60Hz as well, which
might be a little low for them.
I still don't think that a 7-band EQ is adequate for correcting *all*
of the frequency response issues in a typical car, but like MZ said,
it will be great for making minor adjustments "on-the-fly" to adjust
the sound for particular sources or songs. I still think the 7V line
driver is a marketing gimmick, though.
For $55, you're essentially getting a two-way/four-channel crossover
with a fader, PLUS a variable subwoofer output, an auxiliary input if
you want to add something like an MP3 player, and a 7-band equalizer.
You would get more features and flexibility if you bought separate
components or a higher-end combination unit, but for the price, I'm
sure you'll be happy with it.

These manufacturing companies may make 80,000 amps, but they aren't in
the business of advancing the state of the art - they're in the
business of taking another's company's specifications, and producing
the amps for them as cheaply as possible to maximize profits without
having too many of them come back broken.
The "Chiang Wu" manufacturing company in China isn't interested in
improving the design, because that's not what they're paid to do. Any
improvements they make involve increasing the efficiency of their
manufacturing process, not making changes to the design of the
amplifier itself. You can give them a ****ty amplifier design, and
they'll happily crank out 100,000 of them in the most efficient and
cost-effective manner possible - they don't give a crap whether it's a
good design or not.

Bob, what colour is the sky in your world?? Here on planet Earth,
consumer electronics prices never go anywhere but *down* over the long
haul, even without adjusting for inflation. If you do adjust for
inflation, the prices are practically plummeting.
Look through old Usenet posts and see what the typical price-per-watt
for amplifiers was ten years ago.
Head units are the same way. Today, you have to try real hard to find
a CD player that sells for more than $375. (I'm not talking about DVD
players or nav systems, just CD players).
In the late 80's, you would have had a hard time finding a CD player
for LESS than $375, and with inflation, $375 in 1986 dollars is more
than $520 today.
So, whether or not you adjust for infaltion, even the most-expensive
units today are cheaper than the cheapest units twenty years ago.
And for amplifiers, if you've been around car audio as long as you
claim, surely you remember when $1/Watt was actually a *good* price.
Now, amplifiers have gotten so inexpensive that they're practically
commodity items.
And like I said in my other post, if Clarion is discontinuing the
EQS744, it's only because they're going to replace it with a better
unit at the same price point, so it still doesn't make any sense to
"stock up" now.

That's true - I've already said that it sounds like a good value for
the money. I just don't know why you're ordering *two* of them,
unless you're going to use both of them right away.
In 2007, you'll still be able to find either a new-in-box EQS744, or
an even newer version with more features, for the same $55-60, so it
doesn't make any sense to buy an extra one now if you're just going to
keep it as a spare.

80,000, 800,000, whatever. It doesn't change the fact that since the
manufacturing plant doesn't make changes to the amplifier design
itself, they're basically just making the same amp 800,000 times.
They're experts in manufacturing processes, not amplifier design. I
also never said that the mass-produced amps were "total garbage" - I
just pointed out that if they are, the offshore manufacturers can't be
counted on to improve the design, since all they do is build the damn
things.
And as someone else has already pointed out, Soundstorm is just one of
a hundred companies that pay overseas manufacturers to make products
with their logo on them. The best they can hope for is that someone
will mistake them for Soundstream.

But the EQS744 hasn't proven itself to be a historic model, and
there's nothing to suggest that it ever will.
Buying an extra EQ to keep as a spare is like buying a spare
motherboard and CPU for your computer. By the time you need it, the
current offerings will almost certainly be faster, cheaper, and have
more features.

Consumer electronics prices aren't cyclical - over time, the
price/performance ratio always goes down. There may be
short-duration "spikes" if there's a temporary shortage of a
particular model, but over the years, the trend is always down, never
up.
Although you're right that there is a "floor" for the price, that
"minimum price" buys you more and more power as the years go by. For
instance, we'll probably never be able to buy a complete home computer
system for less than about $250-300, but if you look at a typical $300
computer today, and compare it to a $300 system from two years ago,
that same $300 buys you a lot more power, storage, and features today
than it did in 2003.
Same with your equalizer. You may never be able to get a Clarion EQ
for less than $55, but in two years, whatever model is selling for $55
will probably include more features than the EQS744 does today.

I understand inflation very well. In fact, I'm the one that brought
inflation adjustments into the thread in the first place.
Even with inflation, your money goes much further today when it comes
to consumer electronics than it did in the past.
Let's use a simple example. I have a 1972 Mercedes. Looking at the
option sheet for that year, a transistorized AM/FM stereo radio was a
$228 option.
$228 in 1972 had approximately the same "buying power" as $1070 does
today, after you adjust for inflation. (Do a search on inflation and
the Consumer Price Index).
Look at what $228 got you in 1972 - an AM/FM head unit with manual
tuning, five presets, maybe five Watts total power, and two paper-cone
speakers.
Now, I don't have to tell you what you can get in a head unit for
$1071 today. In fact, you'll have a hard time spending $1071 on a
head unit at all, unless you get one that plays DVD's or has a
navigation system built-in.
And if you search for statistics on personal income adjusted for
inflation, you'll see that personal income has grown faster over the
years than inflation, not the other way around.

No flames, although I was talking about consumer electronics in
particular, not all consumer goods. Besides, one could make the
argument that $18000 today buys a lot more Mustang than $3500 did in
1969. Again, I'm not flaming you or trying to insult Mustangs - I
have a 1972 Dodge Charger with a 440, so I'm familiar with the
capabilities and limitations of vintage musclecars. :)
Also, electronics apprentices were probably a lot scarcer in 1969 than
they are today, so that could explain why they're not making as much
today, in inflation-adjusted dollars.

I own an Alpine 4 channel amplifier from '98, as well as a 15" Type-R
woofer. Head units though, I'd never touch Alpine. I've never been a fan of
them what-so-ever. My choices for a unit were the highend Alpine
"glide-touch", the Clarion Touchscreen, or my Kenwood Excelon that I
purchased. I'm so happy I went with the Kenwood.

xplod..you picked kenwood over alpine...lol
it figures....something about kenwood always bothered me....but they
make so many speakers. the speakers must be ok....id guess they make 5x
more than alpine makes anything....

bridged cheaper than my swiss audio....
Is swiss better than profile????
hmmmm i guess ill keep the swiss audio..i like getting high cost stuff n
showing off once in awhile.
