View Full Version : adding an MP3 jack to old stereo?

wondering if anyone has a relatively simple method of adding a line in jack to an old Renaut clio (pioneer) stereo. Checked existing threads but stereo is from 1996 and before the days of aux inputs/cd changers. Motor on tape deck has bitten the bullet so happy to modify wiring to allow line in for MP3 player. Can I somehow wire in a jack to the tape heads or amplifier?

Alternatively could just use some cheap 12v speakers and run them from cigarette lighter? Has anyone tried this and found some suitable speakers?Just after a cheap and cheerful solution.
Thanks for any advice.

You should be able to find a 'cassette to portable cd' adaptor that will do
this for you. It's just a "tape" case with an input cable you connect to
your MP3 line/phones out.

I'd go for the cassette adaptor as a first choice as well. Even
though the tape deck motor is shot, as long as the unit will
load/eject a tape and you can select the tape as the input source, the
cassette adaptor should work.

Another option would be to plug an FM modulator between your antenna
jack and your head unit. It probably wouldn't sound as good as the
cassette adaptor, but it should have the same sound quality as an FM
broadcast.

I recommend one of the FM Modulators. Mine channels my video (portable
DVD/CD player) through the FM band for a surround sound effect.
