View Full Version : Are all DIN sleeves the same?
September 15th 05, 03:14 PM
Apologies in advance for a newb question.
Are all DIN sleeves the same? My new car has a double DIN head unit
installed. I would like to remove it and install a pair of single DIN
units.
Can I simly plug a pair of single DIN components into an existing
double DIN sleeve or do I have to remove the double DIN sleeve and
replace it witah a pair of single DIN sleeves?
Thanks in advance,
Jack

although most DIN sleeves are the same size, the way the hold in the units
differ by brand, and some have different mounts in the same brand.
so it is very unlikely the DIN units will mount in the Double DIN sleeve.
Some Japanese vehicles use a double din that you can remove and use the
mounting brackets to mount 2 DIN units. they would screw right to the
brackets.
What year and type vehicle is it, and what type unit are you putting in it?

Thnaks for the quick reply, Joe.
I have a new '05 VW Passat with the Monsoon double-DIN radio. My
objective is to remove the double DIN Monsoon and replace it with an
(older) single DIN Monsoon. That would free up the second DIN slot and
in there I want to install the Radio Shack PRO-2096 scanner.
Some VW newsgroups report that the 2X-DIN sleeve is riveted in place,
not screwed down. That's why I was hoping that my alternate scheme
would work.
I'm coming from a GM full-sized SUV to the VW, so space is at a real
premium when trying to install all of my comm gear!
