Hello,

My question might sound stupid, but I need help understanding certain things
about setting a transition from a two channel stereo to a 5 channel system.
Once I set up the 5 channel system, however, would we be able to play stereo
sound trough a 5 channel amp without switching so many buttons and hearing
to music through 4 speakers in stereo mode? It is important that I keep
operations as simple as possible for my (non-Techno) roommate.
I'm interested in keeping the sound quality as pristine as possible with my
mains Kef 107. The system includes good quality separates.

Any advice on how to... is highly appreciated.
Thank you

Most digital A/V receivers will play a source in a 2 channel mode
through the 2 front speakers. A few have a "dual stereo" mode that
plays stereo sources through the 2 front and 2 surround speakers,
where the sound from the 2 surround speakers is a mirror of the
fronts. Many receivers have enhancement modes as well as DPL 2 for 2
channel sources. It's a matter of personal preference, but some
prefer these enhancement modes, and especially DPL 2, over "dual
stereo". You'll have to look at the particular models to see how easy
it is to switch to these various modes. Gary E

older Dolby Pro-Logic output from the source.e.g. vcr, using only th e
two(L&R) cables to the input of the amp. All of the processing was handled
within the amp's surround decoder section. I only ever used thie standard
settings, and found the enhanced nothing to be too excited to pay extera
for.. With regular stereo source signals the signal would not neccessarily
come through the extra channels in these"Dolby Pro-Logic" settings that you
select on the amp. There are some surprising exceptions though. It all
depends on the mfgr. With the newer decoding, the signals (can?) come form
multiple dual cable pairings, one pair for front, one pair for rear, single
for the center, and others for sub(s). If your amp will not give you the
ability to get all the poewer for your buck, there is another option. If
your surround amp has bridge pins, or pre-amp in , and main channel out
jacks, etc, and possibly other options, you can do such things as divert
your front power signal to a power amp, and even use the surround amp's
front amps to run your rear speaker pair. I have used a stereo signal
switch-box a switch-box, to both split the main front channels to a sepearte
power amp, and to drive my rears with the second pair of front channels
(quad), with in/out jacks to the suround amp.

the other, not too exciting/mostly annoying selections do provide for
four/five/seven/nine/88 speakers to play your music.
