View Full Version : How about New Orleans?
Schizoid Man
July 27th 05, 10:09 PM
I'm looking for an urban destination for Labor Day weekend.
I've been to New York a billion times, and rather than while away three
days in the suburban wasteland of Dallas or Atlanta, I was thinking of
heading down to N'Awlins.
Aye or nay?

I've only been there once, but absolutely loved it. Awesome food, music
and a great party atmosphere. I was there in the summer and it was
stinking hot and humid, but still had a great time.
I think you'll like it...

If you couldn't deal with Naples....
I've spent numerous weeks at the Marriott in front of the French Quarter.
There's a whorehouse right behind it. Very authentic! The best thing is that
transvestite cabaree I cannot name right now and K'Pauls. You just have to
experience the blackened redfish, don't let the appearance to fool you.
Cheers,

Like I told Dormer, I saw someone get stabbed in the neck.

I could do without visiting the whorehouse. I was more interested in the
food and drink.

I am fascinated by the place itself, but it is the most dangerous city in
the U.S.
As a practitioner of statistics, you know what that means.
Ominously, among my sample, those who lived there are more scared of it than
those who haven't.
If you're one street "off", you could be dead or very hurt.

It means that you've got your statistics all screwed up, because
nowhere is it listed as such. On ANY list that I can find. The highest
it shows up is on a list of top metro areas and it comes in 8th.

Sounds like Philly to me.
Of course I'm one to talk, since the town I grew up in and the town I
live in now are on one of the various lists as well:

Most Dangerous 10:
1
Detroit, MI
2
Washington, DC
3
Baltimore, MD
4
Memphis, TN
5
Dallas, TX
6
Philadelphia, PA
7
Columbus, OH
8
Nashville, TN
9
Houston, TX
10
Phoenix, AZ

I stand corrected. It was so in 1996:

"Crime has been high; at one time -- 1995 and 1996, in particular -- this
was the most dangerous city in America, although concerted efforts to fix
that have paid off with lower crime rates of late."

Yeah, I seem to remember that a decade or so ago it might have been
true. But times change. For example, NYC is now one of the safest
cities in the States, statistically speaking...

I feel very safe in NYC.
Though I still keep my head on a swivel, as pilots say.

Better visit it before the big one... this city may just
become the next Atlantis.

Violence in most cities is due to drug related activity. In tourist
destinations most petty crime is targeted at tourist because they might be
unaware of their surroundings, trusting when they should be suspicious and
alert to criminal activity and finally because most will not return a
tourist city to testify in court. My experience has been by staying out of
disadvantaged areas, especially drug mfg/trafficking areas and use common
sense. RIO de Janeiro and some Mexican cities are what I call dangerous.

According to fbi statistics & mayors of Baltimore, DC, NYC & Detroit and
other large urban areas the bulk of violent crime(including >80% of murders)
is due to drug related activities. I stated my source. . .
