View Full Version : Headphone jack wired to speakers

July 24th 05, 08:14 PM
Hi. I was wondering if there was a product out there that connected to
a standard headphone jack on a laptop and ended in a split speaker wire
so that you could connect two speakers with the red/black cable to a
headphone jack? I have looked and cannot find anything.

Thanks for any help.

Check with Radio Shack. I've done that but with a portable cd player
connected to a pair of speakers for use when washing the car. You
would probable need 2 adapter connections for doing what you wanted.

Perhaps because it's not all that great an idea? If you're planning on
going right from the headphone jack to bare wire ends clipped into the
speakers directly then it's not going to work. The headphone jacks on most
equipment does not have enough power to drive speakers and, in some cases,
will harm to the laptop if you try. Thus most PC speakers have an amplifier
in them. Those usually take either 1/8" stereo or dual RCA connections.
Plenty of cables are available for that purpose.

So unless you're using an amp it ain't gonna work.

Thanks for the advice. Guess it will be best just buying a set of
computer speakers.

Yes. It's called an amplifier.

Yes, but be careful they are good quality and magnetically shielded, now
that everything is manufactured in China it's easy to get a pair for less
than 15 euro. There would be another problem if you connected a pair of
speakers directly to the laptop headphone jack, usually speakers have a
small impendance, like 4-8 ohm while the headphones a much higher, in the
range of kohm.
