View Full Version : Advice needed for home audio system

I'm thinking about buying a 5 or 6 speaker surround-sound systems from Best
Buy or Circuit City. Most come with a DVD player and 5 to 6 speakers, one
of which is a dedicated sub-woofer. Prices seem to range from $99 to $499
for complete set-ups. I'll be honest - I am not an audiophile, and I am not
looking to spend big bucks to exactly replicate a movie-theater like sound
system. However, I am disappointed with the sound that most television
speakers produce. Most TVs don't reproduce high or low frequency sounds
very well, and the small physical separation between the left and right
speakers on a TV set seems too little for a good stereo effect.

(A) As such, I am looking for reccomendations for affordable surround sound
systems that do a better job than most TV speakers: true surround sound
(front to back and left-to-right effects; a noticeable improvement in bass),
but at a cost of less than $299. Are there any systems that you'd
reccomend, or ones that I should avoid?

(B) Even better would be systems where some or all of the speakers are
wireless. Do such systems exist, and what is the minimum price I'd have to
pay for one? I'd be willing to pay more for such a system.

(C) Do these systems only give surround sound for the DVDs, or will they
also work for 5.1 broadcasts over Cable TV? (assuming my local cable system
has any.) Will these systems allow me to hook up a PS2 or Gamecube, and get
5.1 sound from them (again, of course only for those games which support
such sound schemes?)

Thanks much for your input!

Just buy any old thing that's cheap and when it breaks throw it out
and buy some more. After all you are not an audiophile. $99 is plenty
good.
