I have the opportunity to buy a pair of Hales Concept IIIs for $850.00
Looks like from pictures the grills may have a few runs in them but
otherwise they are in good shape. Can i do any better for this price?

They were pretty good speakers by any standard when they came out in the
mid-90's IIRC. However since Hales is long gone and the speaker uses a
custom woofer by a company also long gone (Gefco maybe...) that is known to
blow with some frequency, I would not pay more than a couple hundred bucks.
A friend lost a woofer, tried all sorts of solutions from parts stores but
the speaker was never the same. His remaining good one is a HT center
between big Thiels and the blown one is for parts. It is maybe a little lean
on bass for a speaker of its considerable size and weight but in HT
environment with subs it does really well. Still a risky acquisition IMO.

That's valuable information, thanks.I am waiting to hear back from a local
high end shop about this very matter. They have a statement about Hales
replacement parts on an old cached page from their website but i couldn't
find an update so I will at least hold off untill i know weather
replacement parts can be had. Thanks ever so much again. Chris
