What would be a good replacement/upgrade for a 15 year old Audiolab
8000a (MK1)? Would adding a power supply of another make be useful?

I've no fixed budget and do not mind 2nd hand stuff. The rest of my
setup is an Exposure 2010 cd player and a pair of 20 year old Heybrook
HB3s'. I'd like to know if any power amps work well with the 8000a.

Check this website for details of how to split the internal link
between pre and power amp sections. This is the same mod that dealers
used to perform. The mod will take you all of ten minutes to complete.
Very straightforward process.

I strongly advise you do not use the preamp section of the 8000A. It's
coloured and robs music of its vitality. The power amp section in the
8000A is capable of fine performance, however. I suggest you stick
with that and spend on a good preamp. Valves can sound very nice with
the 8000A. I'd recommend a Croft Micro, if you can find one.

Oh sure, just split up a perfectly good little
amp. Just like when you split up your new 30 gig
Ipod! You thought you were going to get two 15 gig
Ipods. But yes, you got two 15 gig ipods, but all
the tunes were cut in half. So now you have one
dedicated to the right channel and the other one
for the left channel. And since you only have one
ear for a nose, it was a worthless project to
begin with. Geez devil, just go back to ripping
mp3's from the newspaper and keep this audio crap
to yourself....

Ok, thanks. I will have a look at some valve pre amplifiers. I'm not
sure if I can find the Croft Micro where I live.
