tweeter dead

Sigh... why do tweeters die? I barely got to use my Omnisats, and now one
of the tweeters is dead. I think it is because I left it on the floor and
probably someone kicked it. I guess speakers are more fragile than I
thought. I don't think I have any recourse other than to buy a new one. I
could try sending it in for warranty but I'm sure that will take 2 months
and they'll say it was my fault. I'm not sure it was, but it seems unlikely
that a speaker will die after a year due to manufacturer defect.

And to top it all off there aren't even any dealers near me, so I'll have to
wait for the mail again...

Frankly, good tweeters are pretty shock-resistant.

It probably won't take that long, and even if you pay for
the repair, it will probably be less costly than a new
speaker.

Go to www.miragespeakers.com Call the number for the parts department.
I called them today and they are nice people. If they won't sell
direst I'll order it for you.

Thanks for the advice. Are you supposed to be able to replace them
yourself? I looked at it and it doesn't seem obvious how to replace it.
Especially since the omnisats have this unorthodox design, where the tweeter
is mounted on a reflector.

I think I know what happened now. Since I moved I connected my speakers to
my PC temporarily to listen to music. I remember one or two instances where
I unplugged the 1/8" cord before turning off the speakers, producing some
noisy pops. Not excessively loud, but they were still pops.

I guess those few transients must have blown the tweeter... I'm surprised it
is so fragile though. I guess these things weren't meant to be connected to
computers with crappy 1/8" plugs. These seem to produce much worse pops
than you would get if you unplugged the cable from some stereo equipment.

Also I have a digital amplifier, so maybe those are more likely to send
through sharp transients or produce tweeter-popping signals in response to
transients?

One big reason is trying to play audio too loud with an inadequate
amount of amplifier output power. Overdriving the amplifier results in
square wave signals which does a good job of burning out tweeters.
