Seems that I have a drop of 4db or more between 100 and 500hz - with any
of 3 speakers I use

Could it be the amp? (nearfield Radioshack sound meter used)

It happens on both channels - seems odd?

Could be. We had (we thought) a simple project to measure speaker FR
and distortion over temp. So using some software, a soundcard, an old
Kenwood integrated amp and a new microphone we went off to test.

This was a cheap driver intended for tones and the like and possible
future voice instructions (navigation etc.). Anyway its FR wasn't
particularly good, but surprisingly... the old Kenwood wasn't flat
either. At 200 Hz we were putting 240 mV P-P and the output dropped to
below 220 mV at 15 kHz. Double checked the sound card at amp input
and the amp into open load. Sound card was flat (Turtle Beach
Catalina) but that amp sure wasn't into an open load.

Anyway, you should measure the signal level in & out of the amp to
confirm.
