I have a good quality Sony mini-system that I am starting to have problems
with loosing one of the channels. I don't think it is a speaker wire
problem.
It's about eight years old and I am afraid that repairing it could be
expensive.
I do not have much room for a full size receiver and cd player. Any
suggestions on small pieces of equipment. I plan to keep the speakers, they
are pretty good.
I had paid about $500.00 when I bought it.

you may want to check out Ebay for some of the smaller Nakamichi systems....

NAD made (makes?) a 30 watt receiver called the L-40, which has a built
in single disc CD player. If you don't need the cassette decks, its
better in quality than most of the 'mini systems' I've seen. You could
check their website a www.nadelectronics.com

Good suggestion, but these days DVD players are so cheap that I'd buy
a DVD player instead of a CD player. Some companies (like JVC, which
has CompuLink, or Sony, with S-Link) make CD and DVD players, VCRs,
receivers, TVs, etc. that can be connected so that all the gear from
that brand automatically functions as one unit. For example, when you
put a CD into the CD or DVD player, the player will automatically tell
the receiver to power up and switch to the correct settings.
I realize the above may be more than you really need or want, but it
can be very convenient to use, and brands like JVC and Sony are very
affordable.
If you don't want that much convenience, you could go with a player
and receiver from one brand, which most likely can be operated from
one remote.
