Is there a battery-powered (small) microphone that produces line-level
output?
I'd like to carry one to record bird songs I happen into that I don't
know, playing into a creative n200 (which has a microphone that sucks
built in) ic recorder, aka mp3 player.
It has to be small, or I won't have it with me for surprises.
The old Panasonic RR-QR240 IC recorder, the whole thing credit-card
sized, had a fantastic microphone on board - I wonder why onboard
mic technology has gone backwards to today's muffled-quality.

To dissuade bootleggers ?
(I use a Sony NH900 MiniDisc for recording birdsong, and I use the [powered]
mic input with external electrets.)

It (SP-PASM-2) works pretty well as stereo line-in for the N200, in the ``sensitive'' version
with either the 29db or 50db gain switched on (50db barely possible in daytime outdoors,
overload from daytime background noise is pretty common). One small package, clips to
belt easily. It's bigger than the N200 by about 3x, but the N200 is really tiny.
A bass roll-off switch would be nice but you can't have everything. It reveals a huge
amount of daytime energy in the lows that teens love. You can take it out with the
equalizer in the N200 on playback though.
It can also power headphones for use as a dog-hearing simulator.
