View Full Version : Less sound when bridged

I could really use some help here. I know little to nothing about car audio,
except that from what I understand, something's up with my amp or
subwoofers.

My system right now consists of:

Two (2) Alpine Type-R 10"s (
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-URuuZOrCogc/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?i=500SWR1041&search=1041d )
.. They run at 4 Ohms, and take 100 - 300 RMS (1000 watts peak). They're dual
voice coil, and I have the voice coils wired so they're mono.

The amp I have is cheap. It's a Kenwood KAC-7201 (
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-9w9lx8SVfGA/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?s=0&c=3&g=110&I=113KAC7201&o=p&a=0&cc=01&avf=N&search= )
Should be putting out 150 Watts to two channels @ 4 Ohms. When I bridge the
woofers, it should be putting out 230 Watts to one channel @ 2 Ohms.

But for some reason, the woofers are MUCH, much quieter when I bridge them
together. I can't figure out why. Any help?

Any advice on properly setting my amp gain would be appreciated also. I've
heard everything from using voltmeters to waiting for it to sound "muddy".

Thanks in advance!

Ok, so they are dual voice coil 4 ohms. So you have two options:

Wire the coils on each sub in parrallel to make 2 ohms per sub and DO
NOT bridge it, which gives you 230 watts x 2.

Or you could wire each of the coils together in serial to make 8 ohms,
and then wire the two subs together in parralel to make an overall 4
ohm load, and then you'd be making 460 watts, or 230 per sub, so it's
the same either way.

I would not bridge it myself, but it's your decision.
